What are your favorite cutting flowers?

I know we have some gardeners on here.  What are some of your favorite flowers to plant in the backyard?  I am dreaming of when we have a bigger yard and I can plant some stuff I've always wanted to try (or try again if I haven't had success): hydrangea, lilac, roses, peonies, etc etc.

Re: What are your favorite cutting flowers?

  • I love my spring bulbs! Hyacinth smells soooo good and lasts quite a few days when cut. Of course, I have a ton of daffodils and tulips, as well. I also love lilacs as a cut flower. :)

  • Lilacs are my favorite flower (The fact that we have a HUGE lilac bush right out of my kitchen window is actually one of the factors that went into us buying the house we are in now LOL)

I also love roses, if we have the money this year I plan on planting some climbing roses in front of the front portion of our (chain link) fence and try to get them to grow up it and make it look pretty and give a little bit of privacy (in a few years...)

  • I love Sweet Williams.  They last forever and smell wonderful.  Each stem is like a mini-bouquet.
  • Dahlias and lilacs!

  • Roses are my absolute favorite.  I have three climbing rose bushes on the side of the house (next to the driveway) that I planted the year that I bought this house (7 years ago).  I have several more rose bushes in the huge bed that we made along the back of my yard last Fall.  My brother worked for a landscaping company and they were constantly ripping out plants to replace them with new ones and and throwing the old ones out.  My brother hated that and got permission to take anything that was getting tossed.  He used a ton of that stuff in his garden and also gave a lot of it (including a few trees) to me.
  • Growing up we had peonies in my parents backyard and I thought they were sooooooooo pretty and plentiful enough to cut and bring in the house.  However, they were always loaded with ants!  Gladiolus' are really beautiful too.  Both in the yard and cut in a vase.
