*Lyons* (& other first tri working moms)

So, I have to say that I was so relieved when you said in your post below that you are popping out already. I think I am too, but I was just hoping that I look like I am gaining weight, which honestly I was anyway before I got pregnant.

So...have you told your boss yet? I am currently debating what to do. I would like to wait a couple of more weeks, but am not honestly sure if that will be feasible.

Re: *Lyons* (& other first tri working moms)

  • I heart my direct manager, and we have an amazing working relationship.  She's the primary reason I decided to try and make this position work, long term.  That being said, I couldn't keep something like this from her.  She was actually the very first person (other than Brian, of course) that I told.

However, I haven't told my VP, yet.  He's the one that I'll need to work with to approve a part-time schedule (once I'm back from maternity leave), so I'm nervous to approach the topic with him.  I'm sure that he'll be really supportive (he was when I returned from my first maternity leave and asked for a four day work week); but I can't help but feel as though he might be irritated with my continued requests for flexible work schedules.

ETA:  Are you concerned that your boss will be less than supportive, treat you poorly/unfairly, etc.?

  • I told my boss when I was about 10 weeks preggo.  I wasn't showing, but my DH & FIL were doing some work that overlapped with work he was doing outside of school.  I was afraid FIL would spill the beans, and I wanted him to hear it from me first.

(Principals stress whenever someone is pregnant because they have to find a long term sub, and normally they aren't readily available.  Unlike regular subs, a long term sub has to be certified in your field.  Add to that I teach some honors courses, and it takes a special person to fill those shoes.  So anyway, while he was happy for me, I know he stressed for a while about who would fill in for me and how that person would handle starting a school year.  All of it worked out in the end)

  • I know she will be supportive, but I am afraid the stress will put her over the edge.

Our department used to be 4 people plus my boss but with a recent divestiture, 3 of the other employees were sold as part of the divesiture leaving just me and my boss to do what we do. On top of that, she has a ton of new duties with finding our new place in the company so she is leaving what we used to do to just me. She doesn't really do any of it any more other than to give me guidance.

I was going to tell her tomorrow, but she just put her cat to sleep last night, so I am thinking I should try to hold off a week or so. I will only see her one day next week (Thursday) and then she is at another site on Friday. I thought about telling her over the phone or via instant message on Friday so I won't see the stress in her face. She will be happy for me even though it will be hard on her. On top of that, she thinks that I do too much at home and that DH doesn't help me enough so I guess I am just afraid to see any judgment in her face also.

These pregnancy hormones and DH's sudden reemergence of his jealous streak are not helping!
