This is probably a dumb question, but I have zero experience with all this! I'd like to buy at least 1 or 2 nursing bra before I have my baby, so I'm not forced to go bra shopping a few days postpartum and was wondering how do I know what size to get? I'm a 36B right now, do nursing bras in the same size account for "milk" or engorgement? Or would I actually need to buy a bigger size? Also, do you wear a nursing bra all the time, like even at nights? I've heard in the beginning your breasts are so tender and engorged the pressure of a bra helps the pain (even at night). If so, what bra do you recommend for night-time use? What bra do you recommend just for normal day use? Also, do you need a nursing bra with a nursing tank? Does the nursing tank provide enough support and does it provide nipple coverage? Thanks!
Re: Nursing Bras- lots of newbie questions!
Just keep in mind that your rib cage will go back down in size after you have your baby. I bought a nursing bra (38DD) at Motherhood Maternity and once I had Katie it didn't fit right. I got measured at Nordstrom and I was a 34H...pretty big difference. I would get a cheapo bra just to have one on hand in the hospital and for a couple weeks pp, but invest in a nice one then after.
I have big jugs thanks to EBFing and I can't go without a bra at night. I also need something to hold nursing pads in place because I'll leak if I get too engorged. I rec getting a soft cup nursing bra at night.
I hated the bras at Motherhood Maternity, I don't recommend them. I splurged on a Elle Macpherson bra and I love it. The best support I have ever gotten out of any bra.
This is the soft cup bra I got.

I was also a 36B and now I'm a 36C. I'd just a buy a few nursing tanks for the hospital and first few days/weeks. They are super comfy and you don't have to worry about sizing. After things settle down you can look into a nicer bra if you want. I like the tanks (and bras) at Target.
I had to wear something at night too for support and, as pp said, because I had to wear breast pads for leaking. I haven't leaked for the last month or so and now I don't wear a bra or tank at night. GL!
