Breastfeeding

switching bewteen offering one side vs. both

Lots of questions today...

LO started out eating only off one side at a feeding. I then switched over to offering both, and he responded well to this. Once in a while he will fall asleep before I can offer the second breast or refuse it entirely. Does getting one side vs. both at a feeding cause any problems as long as baby is satisfied?

If/when LO only takes one side, would you then recommend pumping the other side (we're trying to build a stash anyways) or just offering that breast first at the next feeding? If you do go ahead and pump the second side, theoretically both sides would then be drained. Which side would you then start with at the next feeding? My guess would be start with the opposite side even though both were drained at the previous feeding.

Re: switching bewteen offering one side vs. both

  • Always offer both sides and if he refuses the 2nd side, pump so you can maintain your supply and build a stash.  Repeatedly feeding from just 1 side (with no pumping) will likely reduce your supply.  For the next feeding, I would feed from the opposite side- the one that was pumped.

  • DS is just a one-sider. He rarely takes a second side, maybe once or twice a week. My supply hasn't had a problem with this, it just means I make about 5 or 6 oz. on each side about every 4 hrs (since he almost always ate every 2 hrs).
