Anyone have a good recomendation for newborn day care in downtown Chicago? I just started looking online and there are so many. Any bad or great experiences??? What do you think the average cost are for 1 newborn?

  • I don't have any suggestions but I can say that it will be upwards of $300/week.  DH works for Walgreens and at their corporate headquarters in the suburbs they offer subsidized daycare for newborns and it is 290/week.  So, I know it's going to be more downtown.  We didn't even look down here, I figured it was better to keep it by home or let LO go with DH to work.

  • Day care centers will likely run close to $400 or more.  And the good ones typically have waitlists months and months long.

Home daycares will run less- but are much harder to find any availability.

  • We're on two wait lists right now - just because we're still uncertain of what we'll do and we'd like to have options when the time comes. I'm going back to work full time in November (if everything goes as planned). I work at UIC, so we found a daycare close to there (the Little Green Tree House) that seemed pretty nice. It runs over 1800 a month (ugh). We're the second in line for November (that is how long their wait list is right now).

We also put a deposit down on the Kindercare at Northwestern (where my husband works). We're still not quite sure if we're comfortable with that option. It seemed nice enough when my husband visited, but I've heard some conflicting opinions.

We are also interested in home daycares - but from what I've learned, they usually don't know if they have openings until a bit before you need it, so that's why we put the deposits down on the other places, to start.

I've found finding daycare in the city to be a very challenging process - best started in the first trimester (I wish I would have started then...I'm at 22 weeks now and we only started a month ago).

We don't have the option of a nanny - good ones are expensive.

    Hey JJ,

We're in the same boat as you.  I've heard about Little Green Tree House but no way we can afford that... and we've put down a deposit for the CCLC at Northwestern (it is no longer KinderCare, sadly, it now stands for Children's creative learning centers).  What have you heard, positive or negative?  I read one review by a lady but one person's opinion can often be biased... I liked it on the tour too.

I've heard good things about It Takes A Village at River City.  That's pretty central.  It's in the west loop and the price is reasonable for infants.  I'm thinking of touring it sometime soon.
