Struggling more than I thought I would with preg weight gain...

I LOVE my belly.  Can not get enough of it and I love watching it grow.  And when I'm thinking about it rationally, I'm completely comfortable with the recommended 25-35 lb weight gain.  In fact, as of my 20 week appt I was only up like 8 lbs so I'm doing ok.  But I have these moments of freakout about the 2nd half of this pregnancy and the weight gain that lies ahead.  I think a big part of that is the fear of not being able to work off the weight after baby comes.  Between working full time and being a new mom...and not being someone who has ever worked out regularly anyway...it's already something that is on my mind.

I know that as long as my doctor isn't concerned, I shouldn't be.  And trust me when I say I am absolutely not restricting my eating or doing anything unhealthy for sweet baby girl.  I would never in a million years do that.  I'm eating regularly, normally and plenty of calories.  I feel awful even admitting this vain concern "out loud" because I know I should just embrace it and focus on having a healthy pregnancy.

It's just a mental battle....can anyone relate?

Re: Struggling more than I thought I would with preg weight gain...

  • I have those moments too.  I have always been very thin and never had to work at it.  I have gained 32 lbs so far and I still have 7 weeks to go.  I gained it in big spurts too during 2nd tri, like 10 lbs one month and 8 lbs another!   I TOTALLY underestimated what 30 lbs would look like on my petite frame.  If I hadn't been diagnosed with GD, I would probably be 10lbs heavier at this point b/c I would still be eating cake and icecream everyday.

I LOVE my huge belly, but the cellulite on my thighs I could totally live without!  I'm not really worried about the number on the scale, but I do wonder how much of this weight will just "fall off" and how much work it will take to get rid of the rest.  I actually cried during 1st tri b/c I couldn't find any maternity clothes small enough for me and my jeans were getting too tight.  Now, I have outgrown most of the maternity pants that I have bought.

I think it is totally normal to worry about what our bodies will look like once this is all over.  Stretch marks scare the living heck out of me!  It is very odd to watch your body change so drastically.

  • I felt that way too during the last trimester when I gained most of my weight.

I think it was hard for me b/c I was always a petite person and it freaked me out to gain the weight but it came off completely within 3 months after having Tyler and that is without exercising much either.

I did breast feed for almost 2 months and that got rid of mostly water weight and do not over eat that much now.

Are you exercising during your pregnancy?

I exercised most of the first trimester when I did not have morning sickness and all of the second semester.

  • If it makes y'all feel better, I am a very small person (5'2" and very slim and fit pre-preg) I gained 45 lbs!!  I have lost all but 10 of them and I haven't done a damn thing, so there is hope!!  (Just so you're warned, though, I lost the weight w/out trying, but my midsection is still tragic.)

  • Both times I found that 30lbs just fell off.  After thirty there was some work involved.

  • I felt that way too with my 1st.  I thought I would never look the same again.  I gained 40 pounds with her, after losing 8 the 1st trimester from being so sick.  I thought for sure she was huge - nope, 6 lbs 4 oz, lol.  I got down to below my pre-preg weight in a month without doing anything but nursing her, though.  I nursed for 10 months and after I stopped I gained probably 10 pounds, but nothing unhealthy.

The difference for me is the numbers on the scale are great ... but you'd cry if you had to see me in a bikini. :-)  I am more worried about getting into actual good shape with this next one.  I'm thinking a need to do some crunches along with nursing this little one.

The extra weight aside, it's going to be a long time before I look decent naked.

  • i was the same way. i had a hard time looking at myself in the mirror and seeing bulges where i'd never had them before. it was hard to deal with, but it got easier once there was a little more of a hard bump.

I've maintained my same level of activity as pre-pregnancy, which is 30-45 minutes of brisk walking with my dog 4 to 5 evenings per week.  Sometimes I'll go for an hour on a weekend day.  But as far as actual working out, no.  I've been afraid to incorporate anything new...

I'm glad others can relate.  Makes me feel less guilty for having these thoughts!

  • i was really worried also but it sounds like you are a having a nice steady weigh gain! I have gained 22 lbs but at a nice slow rate. never more than 2-3 lbs in a week. Also i was 5'2",  100lbs pre preg, so very thin and athletic, but i have hardly gained anything the 3rd trimester when everyone says they gain the most! I am only up 5 lbs the whole 3rd tri.

Dont get discouraged! the body is an amazing thing! ill let you know how i bounce back after i have this baby:)

    You look fantastic!

  • I am struggling with my weight as well.  I was 105lbs pre pregnancy and ran to maintain my weight.  Now I am up 21 lbs and am having a hard time. I think it is because I have never gained this much weight so fast.  Everyone tells me I am tiny or all belly.  I do not feel like it.  I hate looking at myself in the mirror.  I walk 3-4 days a week for at least 30 minutes.  I mostly eat the same as I did before being pregnant.  I broke down when I cleaned out my closet and got rid of a ton of clothes that I am pretty sure I will never fit in again.

I asked my OB if I was gaining to much weight, but she said I was so tiny to begin with I will gain more.  To top it off I have 2 weddings I am in, 2 and a half months after I give birth.

Whatever you do ... don't give away the shoes!  I did a closet clean too and since my feet grew about a size during pregnancy everyone told me they would never go back to their normal size, blah blah.  Well they did .. .and I miss all my cute shoes I gave away. Stick out tongue

I had the same problem with my first pregnancy.  I've always been small.  I gained a total of 34 pounds and I gasped out loud when the scale hit 130 lbs.  I'd never seen a number that large before.  I found it really easy to lose the weight and bounce back after the first baby.   The second baby not so much.

This is me...  I gained about 39 lbs with Luca and 29 with Lila, but started her pg about 10 lbs heavier.  I won't lie.  Those last 10 lbs are hell.  She'll be 1 in 2 weeks and I have about 3 lbs to go.  However, my body will never be the same...  It just won't...  It's a different kind of flab..

  • it's a lot harder to gain the weight gracefully this time around.  With Marion, I gained about 30/35lbs (I stopped keeping track when the power went out with Ike and the pre-e got worse.)  It came off just fine, but like others have said, the body just doesn't look the same either (not that I was that great to look pre-pregnancy.)

This pregnancy, I started down a few pounds from where I started with Marion, and I fought tooth and nail for every one of those pounds I lost.  So it's been hard to just acknowledge that it's going to come back.  Especially since I've been so sick this pregnancy and loosing weight despite eating horribly.  When/if I get better, it's going to be hard to see the numbers go up and my eating have to get back on track.

Don't purge too much stuff!!  I gave away a lot of stuff, and now I lost all my baby weight, plus some, and don't have anything to wear!  Things are bagging off of me, and I am scared to buy a lot of smaller stuff (in case I gain a little back).

If you want to store your clothes (maybe give them away when he turns 1 y/o), that's fine, but looking back, now, I wish I would have kept my stuff.

  • I felt that way for a long time.  I'd cry every time I got on the scale.  Then, I started to swell and knew it was out of my hands.  And THEN I gained a sh!tton of weight in my last month and I gave up.

On the bright side, I lost it all by 7 weeks pp.

And to make you feel even better, here is a link to what I looked like on my last day.

  • Don't get rid of all your clothes..  It has taken a year, but I actually wore a pair of pants this week that fit before I was pg with Luca...  I thought I'd never wear them again...  I did however, box them up..  I would pull out a pair and try them on every few months.  If they didn't fit, I'd put the box back in the attic..  I just gave away all the too big stuff.  It felt good.
