Toddlers: 24 Months+

Tell me about your not-so-great night sleepers

Hi everyone!

I am not really looking for advice so much as knowing there is comfort in numbers.  :)

Emily has not really slept well since November.  Since that time, we packed up our townhouse, moved in with my in-laws while our house was being built, Anna was born in January, Emily started preschool and we are moving again this weekend.  How much change and stress can I put on a toddler, right?!

I am sure so much of this is presenting itself in her sleep.  She naps well and tends to go down well.  Atleast 3-4 times a night she wakes up crying and starts shaking the door.  We go in, offer milk or water,  hold her a bit and then leave.

Anyone else having issues?

(P.S.  My almost 3 month old is sleeping like a rock for 9-10 hours a night!)

Re: Tell me about your not-so-great night sleepers

  • We are right there with you!  My daughter has never been a good sleeper.  The only time she has ever slept through the night was between 4 months and 8 months old.  Since then, she is off and on whether she sleeps through the night or not.  Some weeks she does, some weeks she doesn't.  Have you thought of leaving her door open?  My daughter is potty trained, so a lot of times she is getting up to go pee and she just walks right in to our room and wakes us up, then she usually crawls in our bed and will sleep a few more hours.  I sware, it's like she will finally start sleeping through the night, then she gets sick or is working on another tooth and we are right back at square one.

    So, you're not alone.

  • I count the number of times DD has slept through the night on my hand. And that is in her WHOLE life. She is just not a good sleeper. She is down to waking up one time and lately she has been sleeping in our bed because I have horrible M/S and am too lazy to get up with her. When she was younger we tried all sorts of sleep training and I finally just gave up and figured she will STTN when she is ready. She also has not napped since she was about 14 months old. I make her have "down time" but she refuses to nap anymore!
  • DD comes into our room and goes to DH side of the bed and says up, up. He puts her in the bed then wakes up because she kicks and puts her back to bed 3 or 4 times a night. I have been getting up the first time and making her go back to bed before she gets to his side of the bed trying to break the habit. It was cute at first now it is annoying.
  • I can totally relate.  Ben stopped STTN 9 months ago.  Initially, the pedi and I thought it was some combination of night terrors and 2 year molars.  I do think he still has the occasional night terror, but at this point, I think he wakes up wanting us more out of routine than anything else.  When it first started, we would try to rock him back to sleep, but as soon as his head hit the mattress, he'd be awake again.  So, it just became easier to put him in our bed.

About two weeks ago, he had a good 5-6 nights of sleeping in his crib and not waking up until 6:00-7:00am.  We were crossing our fingers that this phase was finally over.  Nope.  He's back to waking every night again.  The other night, he woke up at 4:00am and didn't go back to sleep until 6:30...and then was up again at 7:15.  I'm exhausted.

Knock on wood, he's a great napper though.  He sleeps 2.5-3 hours every day.  I think he needs this sleep to make up for what he's not getting at night.

This is my house as well, minus the potty trained part though! :(
