A lot of it depends on where you are wanting to send your child. If you have a specific place in mind, checking with them early to see if they have any infant spots open would be good. Where I live, there are 3 centers close by so there really isn't a lack of infant openings. We use a home daycare and those have few infant spots open due to numbers. You can always start researching and calling for information. They might wait until closer to the end of your second trimester to meet with you.
I called about 10 in-home day care providers a few weeks ago (I was about 22 weeks pregnant). We're looking to start day care at the end of October/early November. The providers all said it was way too early to know for sure if they'd have openings, but that I should call back closer to the due date.
I haven't checked into the day care centers near my house, so I'm not sure about timing.

I started looking right around 20 weeks and glad I did b/c if I would have waited much longer I would not have been able to reserve a spot with the provider I'm currently enrolled with. I don't think it hurts to start looking as some centers / in home providers will take a deposit to hold an infant spot. If you're leaning towads in home care it can sometimes be a bit more difficult to find an infant opening since they are only able to have a few infant slots.
