Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How big is your 18 mo old?

I feel like my kids are ginormous.  My friends are always saying how huge my kids are compared to theirs like it's a bad thing or they are unhealthy.  I was chatting with a friend last night and my 18 mo old is much bigger than her 2 yr old and she made comments that made me think she was implying my DD is "too big".

DD weighs 33.5 lbs and is 35 inches tall.

  • DS#2  is 17 mos.  He is 29lbs, 33".  He was 9lbs, 9oz, 21.5" at birth, so he has always been on the bigger side.  He was 27 lbs at his 1 year check. My 3 other kids weighed between 19-21lbs at 1 year!  I don't think "too big" is an accurate way to put it...more like just big.

  • My daughter was 32.5 lbs at her 18 month appt...which was 100 percentile for that age. Her height was 34.5" so she was all proportionate so the doc was not concerned at all.  However, I didn't think she looked freakishly big compared to other kids her age. Definitely bigger, but nothing ridiculous. My good friend has a daughter who is 1.5 years older than my dd and she is very petite and tiny for her age...about the same weight as dd and only a couple inches taller. My friend would never call my kid ginormous b/c of it!  Every child is different and you dd doesn't sound too big to me at all.

  • DS is 18.5M and is almost 26 lbs. (at doctor appt. this week for ear infection).

We haven't had his 18M appointment yet so I'm not sure where he is percentile.

  • 28 lbs and 34 inches.
  • 22lbs and some change, 35 inches tall.

  • 25 lbs (40%) and 37 inches (100%) he often gets mistaken for a 3 year old but DH and I are 6'6" & 6'0
  • We had his 18 month appointment yesterday.  He was 26lbs 8oz (just above 50%) and 33 1/2 inches (75%)
  • I feel like my LO is too small.  she is only 20lbs.  My husband and I are not very big people and she was small to began with.
  • Sounds like she's on the big side, but I wouldn't say "too big". DD's always been big for her age. At her 18 mo checkup she was 33" and 29 lbs.

Our pedi has always stressed that their growth curve (how they progress on the chart) is way more important than anything else.

Your friend needs to bite it. Maybe her kids are too small. Did she ever think of that? LOL.

  • I get it a lot too.  Everyone tells me my son is huge.  When the %'s tell me he is average.  We didn't have a 18mo appt because it was a 15-18 month thing so we did it at 16 months.  Then he was 27lbs and 32 inches.  He only gained 4 oz between his 13 month and 16 month appts.  But my son has HUGE cheeks which makes it look like he is a chunkster when really he is pretty lean.
  • My DD is just barely 20 lbs.  My BIL's oldest daughter who is almost 3 is outweighed by her not yet 2 yr old sister.  The almost 2 yr old is over 30 lbs.  I don't think your LO is too big.  She looks healthy, not chubby at all!
  • At 18 months DD was 22.5 lbs and 32 inches.

At 2 she is 26.5 lbs and 33.6 inches.

  • DD is 23 lbs and about 32" tall.  She's always been below the 50th percentile for weight and height, though.  All babies are different, so I would try not to let the comparisons/comments get to you.

  • DS is 25 pounds and 35 inches, he is tall but lanky. Honestly I would consider your daughter a big kid, too big? That is the dr. call. My DD is 3.5 45 inches and 35 pounds.
  • We get comments all the time, and sometimes they bug me, but I know what my DD eats and I know she's healthy.

My DD is 34 pounds - not sure how tall, but she's tall.

The pedi told us last time that there is absolutely no problem with her size, other than that people will think she's older than she is - and since she looks more like a 3 year old, strangers will make comments about how she's not at a 3 y.o. level yet.

  • I get this all.the.time.

but my ds was 35.5"tall and 34lbs.

    He's in a size 8xw shoe.

Why do people feel the need to always comment.  And also don't you find it funny that you don't see your own kid as big until you see another kid the same age!?

  • DS went to the pedi today, and he weighs just about 24 pounds. He is around 31 inches tall.
  • 25 lbs when I weighed her at the gym yesterday.
  • 24lbs 5 oz, 33 inches
