3rd Trimester

anyone have gestational diabetes?

I don't have the "official" diagnosis yet, but I think/doctor thinks I'm on my way there.  He says I've gained all the weight I should have gained for the entire pregnancy already and I'm just barely at 27weeks.  And I failed my 1hr. glucose miserably even with 12 hours of fasting.

I feel at a loss for what to even do.  I know I don't eat very well, but I don't even know what I'm supposed to be eating!!  And how do I not gain any more weight?  Obviously the baby still has lots of growing to do.  The doctor says I'm on pace to gain 60lbs.  Ugggghhhhhhh!!!!!  This is depressing.  I should've asked more questions during my appointment but I was caught a little off guard, felt my face turning red, and that "going to cry" feeling was seconds away.  I cried the whole way home and for a good hour or so after.

  • I failed my glucose test horrible (my sugars were 180 or 186) after fasting for 12 hours also! It bites!!!! Good luck on your 3hr test, hopefully we will do better!!

Sorry I don't have more advice to you, its all new to me to!

  • Lots of girls on the High-Risk board have GD & can give you great advice.

    Hth!

  • I don't have it, but I also failed my 1 hour miserable - I got 181 - after fasting.  I passed my 3 hour test and I had little hope.

The High Risk board is a good place to ask questions - they were very helpful.  Basically, you need to watch your carbs.  If you are diagnosed with GD, you will be referred to a nutritionist and he/she will help you with your diet.

GL - hopefully you pass your 3 hour test.

Oh this gives me hope!!!! I hope I pass my 3hr test! I have already cut my diet back soooo much because of an inflamed gallbladder and gallstones... I wouldn't know how to cut it back anymore if I had GD, just about the only thing I can eat that is not "rabbit food" is bread and some pastas....

  • Thanks!  I'll check in over there.  I hope I am referred to a nutritionist.  I would love to get a better meal plan and be able to make more informed choices.  I feel like I'm blindly walking through the produce section picking up whatever looks good and I don't know what else to eat through the day.

This extra stress is not helping anything either!!!

  • I failed my 1hr with a whopping 239. They didn't even bother to give me the 3 hr because there was no chance I didn't have gestational diabetes at that level.

I ate whatever I wanted before, and gained more weight than I should have at 27 weeks, but nothing outrageous. But here's the thing....your eating habits did not cause you to get gestational diabetes. There is nothing you could have done to prevent it. The hormones your placenta is producing are just getting in the way of your pancreas working properly. So don't feel badly!

After I failed my 1 hr, I had to meet with a nurse and a dietician so they could teach me how to eat a diabetic diet. Luckily i'm already familiar with it so it was a very easy transition for me (my dad has diabetes). I also have to take my blood sugar with a glucose meter 4 times a day. I have been following the diet to a tee, and my sugars are still high so I have to go on medication. In a weird way this made me feel better because I witnessed for myself that I was doing everything I should but my sugars were still high. It just reinforced in my head that there was absolutely nothing I did wrong and that I shouldn't feel guilty about it!

Don't stress, just follow the doctor's orders and you'll be fine. Also if u stress, it makes your sugars go higher, trust me!
