Just give him lots of opportunities to practice and he'll get it when he's ready. We used to prop the boppy up around DD so she could have something to help support her but still had to balance herself a bit.
Our pedi says it's a 7 month milestone, that they should be doing it by 7 months.
DS has been doing ok with it, but still topples after about 10-20 seconds of sitting up. He likes to spend more time on his tummy and learning to crawl. I wouldn't worry about it.
No worries. Some babies don't reach this milestone until they start crawling. Which is exactly what DS did. He just started sitting up on his own a few weeks ago, after he started crawling.
He would go from a side move to propping himself up with one hand.
DS crawled (on stomach) before he sat up. I've noticed that he still really doesn't sit. Every time I put him in the position he lunges forward and crawls away. He's never sat still.
So I read him a book yesterday with the book held up in front of him and he sat fine. He just doesn't like or want to sit.
As long as he progresses in other ways I wouldn't worry. Some kids are just interested in some things more than others.
Katie hasn't gotten this one down either. The pedi didn't seem too concerned. What she did sort of pay attention to but also didn't seem all that concerned about was LO didn't like putting weight on her feet when being held up in a standing position...her legs collapse from under her or she bends at the waste. She also has only rolled over from her stomach to back only once (that I've witnessed)
I'm sure she'll do these little "tricks" when she's ready.
DD started sitting unsupported at 6 1/2 mos. Your LO is probably getting close. No worries. Just provide plenty of floor play time. FYI I think DD may have mastered it sooner than other babies simply because she had reflux and actually spent a great deal of time sitting on my lap upright because laying down on her back was painful for her. And she didn't like tummy time until she started crawling. So sitting was a natural thing for her.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the advice. I was not sure if that was something expected by 6 months. Some other 6 month babies I know have mastered it already so that is why I thought DS should have. He prefers to stand up (held by me on my lap or the floor) but he is pretty close to sitting on his own. All the new things they are learning to do are so exciting!
