Babies: 3 - 6 Months

DD first plane ride next week....

Does anyone have any tips for a smooth flight? We're going to San Diego next Thursday and the flight is about an hour and twenty minutes. We're going to check in her pack n play. We're also bringing her carseat and base, and stroller. We can check either the stroller or carseat in at the gate, but I'm undecided as to which one.

Any suggestions or tips would be helpful. TIA

  • A Pacy or Bottle is a MUST for take off and landing...something about their ears. I can't remember! We flew when DD1 was 4 months old.

  • we've made 2 trips to florida already with our boys. we check our double snap and go and one car seat at the gate, and bring the other car seat on with us. if you are a baby wearer, I recommend wearing the baby thru the airport as you need to take him/her out for security and put the seat and the stroller through the x-ray machine. also, you need to feed the baby on takeoff and landing because the change in pressure hurts their ears. the last flight we were on, we got stuck circling and my boys screamed the entire time and would not take a bottle or their paci. also, use baby dry diapers and just wait to change the baby when you land.

    good luck

  • Thanks ladies. :) I didn't know about the feeding during take off and landing, but it makes sense. Thanks again.
  • We are also flying to CA next week to visit my parents.  Do we need to inform the airlines that we are bringing an infant?  Or do you just show up?

We flew last week and I just called the week before to ask what I needed to bring. The lady I talked to at Alaska Air said it was good that I called because they had to tag us as flying with an infant. And since we let them know, they tagged the open seat next to us as an infant seat. And if they have people flying standby on the flight, the empty seat next to us would be the last one they filled. I'm not sure if that is just Alaska Air or not. Good luck!

  • If your baby is asleep for take-off or landing, don't worry about waking them to give them a bottle/nurse them.   Her ears will be fine.

Over the past month I have taken 6 flights with my son.  He has slept through all 6 landings and all but one take-off.  The take-off where he was awake I nursed him.

For the person who asked if you notify the airline that you are bringing an infant - the answer is yes.  (a) because most will pre-seat assign you when you are traveling with a baby to be sure that the family is seated together.  and (b) because there are only 4 oxygen masks in a row of 3 seats.   That means you can only have 4 people 'seated' in a row (3 adults and one lap held baby).  By knowing you will have a baby they will be sure there won't be someone else next to you also with a baby and (c) the infant needs to be on the manifest for the flight.      They can add the infant at check-in but it is better and smoother for you if you do it ahead of time.

On some aircraft, only the washrooms in the rear of the cabin have a change table.  For the love of all things good don't change the baby at your seat.  You think there is no way poo or pee will get on the seat.  It can and it does.     I work for an airline.     It is not good when fecal matter gets on a seat.  We can't allow anyone to sit there until it is cleaned.....  if the next flight is sold out there is a big problem.

You will be just fine.  The white noise on the aircraft lulls most babies to sleep.
