Parenting after a Loss

Sick Baby - Day 4 of Fever

Adelyn is sick. We are taking her back to pedi.  She is on day 4 of an on again off again fever.  Ranging from about 99 to 102.

She is puking up mucus....and starts gagging when on her back.  DH and I argued about using the boppy last night to prop her up.  At 7 months, would you let LO sleep on the boppy in their crib?  She has neck control and can roll side to side.  She can't pull herself to sitting on her own yet.

What do you do to help them eat more?  She is not wanting any solid food, barely anything from a bottle.  Seems to eat okay from me....but I have to work and am not there during the day.

  • I'm sorry she's feeling so crummy!  When Mallory had RSV we put two pillows under her crib mattress to get her on a pretty steep incline.  It really helped her sleep and we didnt have to worry about the boppy debate.  I personally wouldn't use the boppy unsupervised because they can slide down and cut off their airway even if they do have good head control.  As for the feeding, have you tried giving her smaller bottles more frequently.  Mallory wanted nothing to do with solids during her bout of RSV and would nurse more frequently but for less time each time.  Hope she feels better!

  • Oh No!  I hope Adelyn is feeling better soon.  I don't think I'd use the boppy in the crib -- even though it would probably be fine, you don't really want to take the chance.  There are other ways you can prop her up if necessary.  We have put big books under the legs of the crib on one side so that she was slanted when she had a cold.  Hang in there.

  • That sucks.  I don't know that I would use a boppy alone because of the gap that it would create under her upper back.  Maybe shove something else in there to support her better?  Or use pillows (we did this when DD had a cold a few months ago, to help her drain and sleep better).  DH was really nervous about doing it, but she was still sleeping in our room and I always woke at the slightest sound, so I felt OK about it.

As for eating - what does the pedi say?  I imagine the whole "starve a fever" thing doesn't work as well for babies, but if she doesn't have much appetite, I'd probably just try to get fluids in her whatever way possible - even if it meant water with a splash of juice from a bottle.

  • I would feel ok using the boppy but I would put a blanket under her back to fill the gap.  We used it for LO when she was sick.  the whole propping up her mattress never worked because no matter what we tried she would end up at the lower end of the mattress smooshed up against the crib.  Once she started being able to sit up from the boppy we stopped using it.

Have you tried giving her any pedialite?  Last time LO was sick our pedi said we could give her some of that.  Good luck and I hope Adelyn is feeling better soon!
