Does anyone on here buy their meat, eggs, dairy, etc. straight from local farmers? I've found a couple of farms via google and we're familiar with one or two from the weekly farmers market, but I wondered if anyone uses a place they'd recommend?
We order all of our meat from Slankers Grass Fed Meats. They have any meat you can think of. The don't sell eggs, but recommend brands that you can find locally. Both brands we actually found at Walmart and both tasted great. We have nothing but positive things to say about this company! The meat is delicious!
If you are interested in a local farm for veggies we get a once a week delivery from Johnson's Backyard Garden. The website tells you what will be included in your weekly box depending on what is in season and growing. Fabulous veggies! You'll still have to go to the grocery store to get additional veggies, but I love getting as much fresh produce as possible.

Ok, fully admitting this is not helpful whatsoever, but it's related. One of my coworkers has chickens so he will occassionaly bring in a few dozen eggs and sell them at the office for $3/dozen. I have been afraid to buy them ever since he told me that since they don't have a way to x-ray the eggs, it's possible that I could crack open an egg and find that it has been fertilized. Probably lame, but I'm not sure I could deal.
Does your coworker have a rooster? We have 7 hens, no roosters. And the hens lay eggs every day without a rooster. But there's no chance of them being fertilized since we don't have a rooster. (i had the same question before we had our chickens! it makes sense, just like us "human hens", it takes a guy to fertilize our eggs )

Easy solution - hold the egg up to a light. The shells are translucent and you would be able to identify a yolk or a chick pretty fast with out opening it.
When I had a CSA membership at Green Gate Farms they used to sell meat and eggs from another farm that raised chickens and beef. I can't remember the name of the places but I know Green Gate has market days on Saturday if you want to go check it out. Might be worth checking out if you want another option for local meat. Sorry I'm not more help.
Actually now that I think about it, Green Gate uploads their weekly newsletter onto the website and I'm pretty sure they publish what farm they get their meat from.

Good idea. I'll try that.
Actually, a fertilized egg that is not incubated is not a big deal. You'll just find a speck of blood in the egg when you crack it. My parents had chickens, and that happened to us on many occasions. I think my mom would just toss that egg....don't remember.
I get eggs from a friend too We meet at a church to exchange produce (sometimes we give him lettuce for eggs) and Clara's always looking for the chickens under the pews
