Baby clothing true to size?

A co-worker just brought her granddaughter to the office. She's 4 months old and is wearing 9 month old clothing. I know because I totally checked the label. Is this a freak occurrence or is baby clothing really not true to size at all?

Re: Baby clothing true to size?

  • It depends on the brand. Gerber runs outrageously small. Carters runs big IMO. GAP runs small, as does Janie and Jack. Circo runs small too.

It depends on the brand.  Some brands run huge while others run really small.  Also, babies grow at such different rates that assuming they will wear clothes that correlate to their age is not always accurate.
  • I vote that it's not true to size and depends on the brand. DS currently has a 12 month size Mini Boden sweatshirt that he can still fit into (he's 26 months), but American Apparel's runs tiny tiny tiny.

  • Apparently that happens a lot!  I went shopping with my sister and got some stuff on sale for next summer.  My mom got a good laugh that we thought he would fit in the months he actually is.  Oops!
  • Depends on the baby.  My nieces could wear their clothes after they were supposed to have grow out of them.  Their brother was busting lengthwise out of his 9 month sleepers at 3 months.  That's why I'm not going to buy a bunch of stuff before hand....just as I need it.

  • I think certain brands run smaller and others run bigger. To me off brands and store brands like gerber, walmart brand, target brand etc run smaller than brands like Gap and Gymboree. For me carter's always ran true to size for the most part, but like the pp said it all depends on the baby. Just their shape can change the size, whether they are wide or narrow, chubby or scrawny.

  • Each is different, just like adult clothing.  XL at Gap and XL at Abercrombie are two completely different things.  You'll notice, as you gather more clothing in varying sizes, some is ridiculously small, others are ridiculously large.  When sorting, rely more on your visual judgment than tags on the back.  Smile
  • My son never wore the clothing for his age. He always wore much larger.
  • It totally depends on the baby/child.  My son has always worn the size that correlates w/his age.
  • DS's clothing was always twice his age, so if he was 4 mos he was in 6-9 mo. clothing, or at 12 mos he was wearing 24 mo. Sometimes we would happen across a true-to-size outfit, but that was rare. Now he fits in either 4T or 5T, depending on what the brand is, and cannot fit even remotely in Boy's sizes because they are either too long, too short, or cut wrong. It's a HUGE battle to find the right size, honestly.

  • DD has always worn a bigger size. gerber DOES run SUPER small. and I foind that Carters ran true to size and MAYBE a little big.

Gap runs small? Sad That sucks cuz I just bought our son a sweater that was on sale there the 3-6 month size figuring it would fit him the first part of winter (which here starts around November) since he is due in September. I really hope it fits him cuz its so cute.

Don't worry...it may fit. My daughter is very tall for her age (in 4T) so things appear to run smaller to us...BUT she was a very small infant...I bet it's fine.

  • Depends on the brand and the baby.  For us, Gerber was the smallest & Carters was the biggest.  Old Navy & Gap were pretty consistent.  But DD is a shrimp and has always pretty much worn one size down from her aged size.

  • I think for the most part it also depends on the size of the baby.  My ds was a preemie, so he has always worn clothing true to size.  For example, his adjusted age is 8 months old, and he wears 6-9 months.  He is just now 19 lbs.  My friend's little boy was 19 lbs at 4 months, but then again he was almost 9 lbs when he was born, so I really think it just all depends.   It seems to me too, that Carters and Circo tend to run bigger and the Wal-Mart and Gerber run really small.

  • I also think it depends on the babies growth.

  • Like everyone else has mentioned, it really depends on the baby and the brand. Gerber was always true to size for DD. She is really thin and always has been. Gymboree and Carters were always big on her. She can still wear a 24 month dress from Gymboree and she is turning 3 this month. So I guess it depends on if they have pudge as well as their length. DD wears 3t in pants because her legs are long, but she can wear anything from 18 month to 4T in shirts. She has no fat on her arms or legs. We said she had tree frog logs when she was an infant. lol. BF's daughter is wearing 18 month and she is not quite a year.

  • Not all babies are the same size - depends where they fall on the percentile.

My nephew is almost 5 months but he is 100% in height and weight so he is wearing 6-12 month clothing.

  • DS was in preemie clothes for 3 months.  Now he is almost 2 and wearing 4t! lol

  • You need to go by the weight of the clothes not the age of the clothes. DS was never in newborn and was barely in 0-3 maybe 2wks worth before he started wearing 3-6. He then started 6-12 way before 6 months and is now in 12-18 or 18-24 depending on the store.

For us, Gerber ran extremely small and I was never a fan of their stuff. Old Navy runs a little small esp their shirts seem to be short on DS. Carter, gymboree and janie and jack all run true to the weight/height size
