Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Erm...is that the placenta? (warning...TMI...really, seriously, TMI)

After speaking to my lawyers, I have been advised to issue the following statement: If you are currently eating, thinking about eating, or possibly ever want to eat again, just close down this post and step away from the computer.

Can't say I didn't warn you...

So, I had the D&C on Thursday. After that, bleeding off and on, followed by the -worst cramps ever- on Monday afternoon. A few clots, nothing to raise an eyebrow about. But, there was one clot that just fell out of me and onto the floor when I got ready to go to the bathroom. It was a bit thicker than my thumb, and about as long as my middle finger. But it was somewhat dry, and it didn't have the squishy and bloody consistency of regular clots. This one was dense and tough, like only a sharp steak knife could cut through it.

I've never actually seen or felt a placenta before, so I don't know if this particular clot was part of the placenta, or just a messed up clot. If I did in fact pass part of the placenta, I'm worried that this means that the dr didn't get everything out on the first D&C, which would require me to have to repeat that joyous experience.

If you have/had experience or knoweldge of this, does this sound like placenta-material, and if so, is it cause for any alarm?

The good news is, after passing that monster of a clot, I've been pretty much cramp-free since Monday night, with only light bleeding.

  • Ugh...I'm so sorry.  I didn't have much bleeding, clotting, or cramps after my D&C.  Is your doctor checking your hcg levels at all to make sure they're going down?  I think I'd be concerned that the doctor didn't get all the tissue out during the D&C.  Maybe you should give them a call to let them know what happened and see what they say.  I really hope you don't have to have a repeat D&C.

  • I saw my sister's placenta when she gave birth to her 2nd child and that sounds like it could be that.  Hope you don't have to have a repeat D&C

  • Thanks all.

I went ahead and called and left a message for the nurse on duty (she usually calls back between 3p-4:30p). I feel kinda bad for calling her -again- this is the third time in the last week (each time I call, I've gotten the answer "it's normal".) Hopefully I'm not their only slightly crazy patient :)

My f/u appointmen isn't until April 29, and I figure he'll test the betas then, but there wasn't any planned testing between now and then.

  • Dr office called me back, and told me it was the "decidual cast". It came from the opposite wall of where the placenta was, and has a more "dry/hefty/solid" texture than the other lining. So, it's normal. Yay! Now, let's just hope those betas are close to zero by 4/29, and I'll be happy...well, at least as happy as I can be, given the cr@ppy situation.

  • Yikes- Glad to hear that it was at least normal to pass that- but I'm sorry that you had to- that would have freaked me out big time. Glad you made it thru that and that cramping is almost over!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I had something very similar happen. (Same shape and everything.) My doc. also said decidual cast. I'm glad that part is over for both of us! Best wishes.
