Preemies

? for Moms of "older" preemies

How are y'all planning to handle outings during RSV and flu season?  It's going to be so hard to go back into "lock down" after we've gotten used to being able to go places (with lots of hand sanitizer and precautions, of course).  I've resigned myself to not taking her to church and we arranged for her to have her own basket of instruments at Kindermusik so she doesn't have to share with the other babies.

My mom keeps her while I work and I've pretty much told her I don't want them to be stuck at home all day every day but to try to keep outings to public places (Target, etc) to mornings before they get crowded.

So, what are y'all going to do?  Are you going to keep your kids away from all public places or are you going to not change your routines?

btw- Campbell did qualify for the RSV shot and she will start that plus get her flu shot next week.

Thanks!!
Martha

Re: ? for Moms of "older" preemies

  • For my DS's second winter we still stayed mostly at home.  We went out grocery shopping, Target, etc on weekday mornings and I always used my floppy seat.  We still did library time except for at the peak of RSV season and he sat on my lap and didn't really play with the other kids anyway.  Each year i've tried to let go a little more, while still using lots of hand washing and sanitizer.

  • Our routine will not change. DD was just a feeder/grower in the NICU even with her low birthweight. She is going to get sick this winter no matter how hard I try to keep germs/kids away from her. It's impossible.

The best thing I can do is be aware of what signs to watch out for and take action when needed when she does get sick.

  • I plan on keeping him away from public places (malls, grocery, etc.) but I will be taking him to family gatherings this year. He will also be getting his RSV shots again this year.
  • We're doing pretty much the same thing and trying to stay away from our friends with kids in school.  We still are getting the RSV shots but we just can't keep in doors 24/7 or I'll go crazy.  But like you the mall, target, early or not buys hours... For the holidays our Pedi said to feel free to use us as the excuse not to go to family events if we don't want to or need a way out.  But we've put the standing rule that if anyone is sick we'll be leaving as soon as we get there and that we ask that everyone in the family gets their flu shots well before seeing the babies.  We sent out an email asking for the family's help keeping the babies healthy and laid out our needs.  Everyone seemed very understanding.
  • i haven't really decided yet what we are going to do.  on one hand they are almost 15 months old and probably could use some exposure to germs since they have no respiratory issues.  on the other hand i am not sure if i want to risk serious illness for that.  i think that it is likely that we will somewhat limit where we go and take more precautions when we do go places.  i plan on talking to their pedi on friday at their 15 months checkup though!
  • I guess I hadn't thought about it, because I do not even think ?of him as a preemie anymore. ?He is all caught up size wise and developmentally, but I guess that doesn't mean that his immune system is caught up. ?

?I probably will not change our routine at this point, but I will be careful about hand washing and using sanitizers. I will ask the pedi about the shot at our next appointment.?
