not pumping enough =(

When I nurse Zoe, she gets plenty of milk. I pump in the morning (this milk goes in her oatmeal), at work, and at night. I'm not getting as much out when I pump. I've had to dip into my freezer stash this week. I'm trying to pump extra to boost my supply. I'm drinking a ton of water and eating oatmeal. I really wanted to make it to a year with no formula. I teased DH that I could just quit my job to nurse Zoe full time. ha, ha, ha.

Any thoughts I why I'm making enough for her, but can't pump it out???

Re: not pumping enough =(

  • You are almost there but regardless you have done a great job!  Maybe it is temporary.

Would the drugs help at this point or is that only in the beginning?  What about some of the other stuff people usually suggest on here like Mother's Milk Tea maybe or Fenugreek?

And on top of the fact that you have made it this far  you have done it with a crazy nutso work schedule :)  For that you deserve brownies and many drinks!

  • Like ECU said, you're almost there and you've done an amazing job!  And totally off subject - that siggy pic is precious!

Question for you though... could it be Zoe?  I had a dip in supply around 8 months and started dipping into the freezer stash and after a few weeks of worrying myself to death over it daycare mentioned that DS wasn't taking as much milk as he used to at lunch, he wanted more solids.  By about 9 1/2 months he dropped his lunch bottle entirely.  It was working out that I was making enough milk, just enough, but still enough for him for the day.  So I figured that's why he was always getting what he needed from me and I wasn't pumping enough. Just a thought for you!

  • I guess we're getting to the point to drop a feeding. She nurses 5 times a day. My mom says she still takes 7 ounces at most feedings when I'm at work, so I'm not sure when to drop a feeding.

  • Try Fenugreek- it's about $8 at Whole foods and after taking it for a day or two you should see an increase- mine was about 2 oz more.... It doesn't have any side affects (other than you might start to smell like it- a sweet herby smell) and probably the easier and cheapest option to try.

    Good luck!

  • Right around this age Keira stopped drinking as much milk as she used to. She was eating more and more solids and nursed a lot less.

And I am one of those people who always had issues pumping, which is why I dont have a freezer stash and Keira drank from a bottle like a grand total of maybe 20 times in an entire year. She always got more than enough when I BF her, but I hardly got any at all when pumping. And to add, pumping actually would kill my supply, not boost it. My body was just weird that way. So I said screw pumping since I was at home anyway and didn't really need it. I would have really been up a creek if I had to go to work. I did try to pump around this time too to see if I could trick my body and make it make more, but I got NOTHING out since my supply had gone down anyway. (I want to torch that pump.)

I am with you and was helllbent on not giving my kid a drop of formula! And she never needed it thank God! I did have to use supplements though. What really worked for me was More Milk Special Blend from Motherlove. Since you have not had issues pumping in the past, I think this would boost your supply up again so you can continue pumping even though Zoe is not eating as much. You are so close to the home stretch---you can do it!

  • That was also about the time I started dipping into my freezer stash and nothing I did helped, water, oatmeal, fenugreek, it just wouldn't come up.  I can also nurse him with no problems at all and on the weekends he never goes hungry.  We just dipped into the freezer stash and at 10 months I had to give in and give him formula.  He hates it so it has to be heavily diluted with BM.  I feel good that he made it to 10 months without ever tasting the stuff and now that he does have it it is only 4 oz a day on weekdays only.  I am sorry you are dealing with this.  It was very hard on me, I am sure it isn't easy for you either.

  • I don't know what kind of pump you use but I got new valves on my Medela PISA and that helped some.  Also, the local herb shop in my town recommends Red Raspberry and Blessed Thistle.  But I've been supplementing with one bottle of formula during the work week because I only pump one time at work. I was hesitant about doing it for a long time but then I just got over it and I'm o.k. with that.  And maybe she is ready to drop a feeding or cut back just a bit on her ounces.  Caylee has never taken more than 5 in any bottle (bm or formula) so I've been lucky not to have to stress as much about the ounces.

  • I had the same problem around 9 months - that's when I started supplementing with formula.  I did try all the herbs and didn't see any difference.  I honestly think my body just didn't respond to the pump anymore b/c I knew Ella was nursing well and getting enough milk.  So - I did 3 oz of formula a day.  I really didnt't want to at first, but the stress of not pumping enough was making me CRAZY and that probably perpetuated the problem every more so....

  • try a bigger breast shield?  my LC measured me for the medium size 24which worked for a while but out of nowhere I suddenly was barely getting anything.  my PISA came with the 27 mm size as well and it was like magic!  And i don't even have big nipples!
