Babies: 9 - 12 Months

nbr- money and budgeting..

Did your parent (s) sit down and talk to you about money, bills and budgeting?

Neither mine nor DH's did, and we are figuring things out as we go. We both learned the hard way about credit, and credit cards.

Re: nbr- money and budgeting..

  • No. They always had problems with money and so forth. Bills were always late.

I swore I would never be like them and pay all our bills on time. My DH is horrible with bill paying. He only has to pay his car insurance (I do the rest of the bills) and he is late every.single.month. Drives me crazy.

  • My parents were very into saving money but they never really talked to me about credit cards and all that. I went crazy in college rang up a bunch of debt and am still paying off some. I learned and am wiser now. One thing though is I never paid anything late and never will. I would rather be broke and at least have my bills paid. I honestly think finances should be a course in HS that all students are required to take just like home-ec and shop class are.
  • No, mine didn't, but DH's tried to teach him some financial responsibility and he is kind of failing.  LOL, not failing, but it's time for me to take over the bills to make sure everything gets paid on time.  We have plenty of $ to pay for everything luckily, it's his priorities that need to be re-evaluated.
  • Yes.  It was an ongoing dialogue.  I still had some ups and downs, but nothing terrible.  DH's parents didn't teach him anything about money.  Before we got married we read a lot, disclosed all of our financial "stuff" and came up with a plan that would work for us.  We still use it, and tweak it every 6-12 mos.

  • Not really. They never really talked about it with me. But i knew things were tight at times.

But my SO's Parents are AWFUL with money and Bills. And my SO has inherited this... and that is one thing i can not stand about him. Every.Single.Month his parents are getting there water or electric cut off and spending so much on late fees to get things caught up. They are always in the hole.. needless to say they are always coming to us to borrow 100 bucks until next payday. Confused But what can i say? We gotta help em out ya know?

  • Not until I was a teenager. Once my parents divorced, my mom sat down with me and talked about wants vs needs, and while in high school she told me that if I wanted things that were "wants" I would have to budget for those myself.

In a weird sort of way, working so I could have cable tv, prom dresses, and class trips sort of made me more financially responsible than DH. DH would whine about finances not being great a few years back, but when I suggested we make cuts that impact leisure he would start whining even more. (I'm not saying I would make DD pay our cable bill but.. things like designer jeans? Hell yes.)

I plan on starting Olivia out with an allowance and discuss budgeting and saving with her on a regular basis once she's old enough to grasp it.

  • No but we both had generally frugal parents so that was something we picked up for ourselves.

  • Yes- I have active memories about my mom teaching me how to write a check (it was the 80s...) and my dad teaching me how to balance a checkbook.  I went back to them later about more complex things like investing, but they definitely covered the basics.  And I learned a lot from Suze Orman :)

  • Nope. I think my dad used to try to teach me about saving, but my mom bought me what ever I wanted... I promise I am not completely spoiled.

DH is the exact opposite. He grew up on a shoestring budget. His mom had him open a checking account very young and he had to balance it. He has impeccable credit and is amazing with money. Me, not so much. I try, but I like to indulge. Hence, our new budget.

  • No they didn't and now I'm paying for it.  I also learned the hard way about credit, but I've since learned my lessons and always pay everything on time.  Now, my spending habits leave something to be desired which I also learned from my Mom but I'm working on that.

I totally agree with this, and I say it all the time.  I plan to teach DS all about saving, rrsps, credit, spending...all of that stuff!
