2nd Trimester

Shettles Mehod

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the this but I've heard about the Shettles Method to "ensure" that you will have a boy or a girl based on your ovulation cycle, what you eat, certain positions, and your pH level. Has anyone ever done this?  Has it worked?  My mom said she did the "position" method and got a boy and a girl and it worked for her.  (kind of gross to hear that)My husband and I don't plan on trying to get pregnant until next summer. I was just wondering if anyone tried this and what your results were.

Re: Shettles Mehod

  • my mom claims thats how she got me. My father and her read a book and used this method. He gave up his coffee. etc. she explained it to me. They previously had 2 boys. Idk If it works or not. maybe!

  • I tried it twice in hopes to get a girl. I am pregnant with my second little boy. I did everything they said and it did not matter at all. Hope it works better for you.
  • The whole "what you eat, certain pH levels, and positions" is all crap. The shettles method is based on timing and actual science. Boy sperm swim faster, but die sooner. Girls swim slower, but live longer. Therefore, if you're charting and know when you're ovulating, you can time sex to help determine boy or girl. It is not guaranteed, but it does increase the odds. So if you want a boy, have sex as close to O as possible. If you want a girl, have sex 3-4 days before O. Most women here are just happy to get/be pregnant though. And honestly, trying to "time" the sex can seriously cut your chances on conceiving.
  • ditto softskate...we initially were going to try it, but after several months of trying we got impatient and gave up. The method was really specific about the very small window you could have sex during in order to have a boy (if I'm remembering correctly) and I wanted a baby, damn it, lol.

I could see us going back and trying it though for the next baby.

  • The Shettles Method has been widely disproven. No one was ever able to replicate his results.

There have been some positive results, but you have a 50/50 chance to begin with.

I will tell you this. I always thought I wanted a girl.  Before DH and I started TTC I was all about how we were going to do this and going to do that to have a girl.  Didn't end up doing any of that because when it came down to it, I just wanted a baby.

Some days I lean more towards wanting it to be a girl. But other days I think how great a boy would be.

TTC is hard enough without setting yourself up for failure and dissapointment by trying for a specific gender.

yep, read the books on all the techniques.  my friend and i both started out trying for a certain gender but you may have to be super patient.  after a while we both just wanted to get pg.  10 months later - i finally was!  who knows what i'm having??!!  can't wait either way-

  • I didn't care.I read the book but I think it's a crock.

Technically we had a 50/50 shot. We BD'd, went an ran a race and BD'd that night too. We'd also did the every day one for 3 days before I ovulated to 3 days after I ovulated.

I wanted a baby, didn't matter if it was a boy or girl.

This for me, too.  We may have tried it the first couple of cycles but by the time we finally conceived we just wanted a baby, period!  Plus at first, for some reason we were trying for a boy, and now I can't imagine not having my little girl to look forward to.  So I'm glad it never worked for us.

  • I read it and we tried for a boy.  It worked for us.  My MIL swears it worked for her 3 times as well.

Funny story:  While reading the book, I mentioned to Husband some recommendations for a girl:  Man on top, shallow penetration and no orgasm for the woman-to which he promptly responded, "My specialty."

    I nearly pissed myself laughing.

  • We weren't trying to use Shettles at all, just thought I'd put my own experience out there.  We tried 4 days and 3 days before O and that was it for the month (husband was out of town on a business trip).  So theorectically we should be having a girl.  We aren't.  We are having a boy.  So honestly, I wouldn't put too much into the Shettles Method, you have a 50/50 shot either way!

  • We didn't do shettles...but according to the "timing" DS should have been a girl and this baby should be a boy.  50/50.  I joked with DH that if we wanted a girl this time I shouldn't O...but that's no fun and we chose not to comply Embarrassed

  • I have never read the book, but am familar with the method.  Saying that - for both my pregnancies I didn't "use" the method, but I did know the day I conceived, and the day I ovulated.  Both times the sex of the baby (per the method) were CORRECT.  Same thing for my best friend . . .

  • We didn't try the method - but it was right for DS.  We had sex the day before and the day or O.

Who knows with this LO.  We had sex 3 days before and the day before - so it could be either.

  • I charted and while we didn't intentionally go by the shettles method it kind of worked out that way. We had sex a few days before O and a couple days after O. Not the day before, of or after. We're having a girl.

I thought the Shettles method was based on timing? We ONLY had sex on the day of ovulation, which technically would have meant we should get a boy. We didn't.

  • My sister swears by it. I did everything the opposite of what you should do to have a girl (because we were not actively trying) and we're (shocker) having a girl! So, I guess it really is a crock or we just got lucky, maybe?
  • Very interesting ladies....
