Baby Names

Sibling names starting with the same letter?

If I end up having a boy, I'd love to name him Blake.  My only issue is that my daughter's name is Bridget.  I can't decide if I am okay with both names starting with the same letter, or if it is just too matchy matchy.  My husband is on the fence about this too.  Should we give up on Blake or are we just over-thinking this?

(For the record, if we end up having a girl instead, we would not give her a name that starts with 'B' because I know everyone would end up mixing their names up!)

Re: Sibling names starting with the same letter?

  • I don't think it's that big of a deal. It's not like the names rhyme or something.

  • I don't think it matters! They're separate names and it's not like they rhyme.

  • I think Blake and Bridget are different enough to not cause confusion.

When I saw the title of this post I was prepared to say no because my name is Kara and my sister who is 14 months younger is named Katie. We were mixed up ALL the time.

  • I think you are definitely overthinking it. I would not do it on purpose (like the duggers) but if it happens it happens.

  • I agree with everyone the names are different.

  • Our kids just happen to have names starting with the same letter.  I have a daughter and 2 stepsons and this one we'll probably do the same letter just because!  Some people mix up the boys' names but it's not all the time or anything.
  • My sister and I share initials- Rebecca Lynn and Rachael Lorraine. We liked it! Our names didn't get mixed up much and it was a fun little thing to share. Now- if you had more than 2 or 3 kids it'd get excessive in a hurry- but for just a handful it's fine.

  • I think if it's only 2 kids with the same first initial, it's fine. If you get to 3, then it might start seeming odd.
  • I think as long as you like the name and it feels right to you, go for it!

However, my husband comes from a family of SIX boys. All of them have names beginning with "D" and all of them have their father's first name as their middle name.  With their names being so close in spelling and all the same in initials, they have some issues with postal services!  Sounds a little silly but we get bills for his brothers all the time!  And, things like Social Security numbers can get a little tricky!

    Good Luck with your decision!

  • I think that Blake and Bridget sound good together.

  • I don't think same letters is bad. It could be cute if the names aren't too matchy-matchy which Bridget and Blake are definitly not. Though If you consider a #3 I wouldn't give him/her a B name... That would be too much IMO
  • That is fine, IMO. If we end up using certain names, the sibs will have first syllable names too.
  • My name is Meredith and my brother is Michael.  It's never been an issue.

  • I think it's fine to name your kids with the same letter. My daughters names start with an  A  as does mine. My husband and son are both Henry so yea I guess u can say I love it!  Big Smile

  • I think it's fine.

We were considering having a Logan and Luke but decided against it (only because we have a Luke in the family already).

  • Personally, I'm trying to avoid it.  DD is Clara and DH wants Catherine if we have another girl.  I don't like sibling names that start with the same letter, but that's probably just me.
  • I don't think it's a big deal. Especially if you REALLY love the name. Me and my brother had the same first initial. It never bothered us any.
  • I don't think it's a big deal. I have a friend with daughters Reese and Reagan.  She wanted her daughters to have names that started with the same letter.
  • I dont think having two children with the same first letter is bad... its when you have more then 2 that it gets a little weird... just make sure your next baby isnt named with a "B"... BTW my two oldest sisters are named Alysia and Amanda.. and no one has ever thought it was weird

  • Wow - thanks for all the responses!  That's a great help, and I don't feel so weird about it anymore.  Thanks again :)
