1. a breast pump. I needed it badly the day after we got home from the hospital.
2. newborn sized sleepers and onesies. We only had 5 onesies and 2 sleepers as I was convinced she would make it to her due date and be over 8 lbs neither of which happened. We searched high and low for newborn sleepers and couldn't find any so she kept wearing the same two until this week. The 0-3 are still big but she fits them better now.
Granted, homeboy showed up several weeks early, so that may affect my list some (some things we knew we needed but were planning on getting the following week). I know in the first few days there was a BRU and Target run for several things...
Thermometer (since we delivered at the birth center and went home several hours later, we were to take C's temp every few hours for the first 24 hours)

I know there are other things that are escaping me...
Things I bought beforehand: Preparation H pads, pads, nipple shield. I wish I would have brought a nursing tank to the hospital with me, but I hadn't thought about it. I would have just worn it under my gown. Some people also suggested buying a package of "granny panties" so you don't ruin any of your underwear (since you are bleeding for 3-6 weeks). I wish I had a pump sooner, but I hadn't bought one b/c I wasn't sure if BFing was going to be "for me". It ended up being fine - but I think a pump would have saved me some frustration in the beginning of engorgement and latching.
Zippered sleepers....they are so much easier than the snaps!! (especially when you are sleep deprived)
Baby hats. The hospital hats seemed to fit DS the best so you may want to grab a few extra and pack them away during your stay. All of the hats I had at home were huge and DS was full term, 8.5 lbs.
Ditto the pp that said a table next to the rocker...you can't imagine how much "stuff" there is!

PJ pants & bigger undies. I thought I bought granny panties that were going to be big enough...I had to send J out to buy more the day we got home!! Poor guy. I needed them to go up higher over my incision. Also, I had 1 pair of big pj pants from ON but asked my friend to stop and get another pair. I ended up swelling SO FREAKING MUCH from the surgery I couldn't get anything on other than those stinking XL pj pants. i'd like to burn them now, since I wore them for 2 weeks straight.
Also, make sure you have some Little Tummy's or Mylacon.

We ended up liking gowns better than the sleepers. We got 2 packages from Wal-Mart that were or very soft, thin, fabric. But I also got some later from Carters that I liked because they were super long. The WM ones worked great for a while, but then he ended up with it around his tummy because they were just too short.
We needed Premie size sleepers for the first couple of weeks. We only got like 5 of them, but DD was born full-term and NB sleepers were just too small. The onesies were ok but the sleepers were so big we could fit two of her in there...keep in mind during the first two weeks baby is going to loose weight then gain it back so even full-term babies are pretty small!
Squeeze tubes of vaseline and extra guaze if you are circ'ing your boy
This - I think we ended up with enough from the hospital, but we overdid it in the vaseline department for the circ b/c it stuck to the gauze one time, and it freaked DH out!)

We prefer the gowns better too so that is what I was referring to.
Also I only had one nursing bra and no nursing tops - it was on my to-do for the weekend she was born. I had to make a trip four days after delivering to get some nursing tanks and tops and that SUCKED.

We did not need these due to the new procedure of plastibell which requires no care. It is a ring that will fall off after 7-10 days. Truly the best thing!
I bought one nursing bra and two nursing tanks until I knew bf was going to work for us. Then I sent my sister to Target to buy a couple more. I also recommend taking a pair of pj pants. Once I showered I just wore these and a nursing tank with my robe when needed.
Pantyliners- I did not bleed heavy enough for pads and had my sis pick these up also.
Humidifier- with all the pollen we both got congested and it helped tons along with saline drops & aspirator.

Oh- I'm SO glad I brought my nursing pads and nursing bra to the hospital. My milk came in the morning we left and I leaked really bad from the side I wasn't nursing on. And I would also have some extra Dermoplast Spray on hand (the numbing spray, the blue can, but not the antibacterial red one), Tucks pads, the hospital will give you some, but within the first few days I needed more.
Lots of meals in the freezer (that whole baby coming early thing). We spent a bunch of time the first 2 weeks making extra stuff to put in the freezer b/c things were relatively "easy" then and DH was off of work. I've been very glad to have the freezer meals since then, and wish we had more in there!
Re: What did you forget/not have?
regular q-tips to apply diaper rash cream
trash can to throw misc items away
side table by the glider to set stuff on while rocking LO

Comfy socks
Thanks for all the ideas.
I'm making a list of things to pick up this weekend when I go out running errands.
