add another appointment...

Not sure if any of you remember my post before about appointments every but this week... Well Saturday I get a call from Mount Sinai to book and appointment for me on Thursday. I'm going to see if I should be considered a high risk pregnancy because of DS's mutant gene (the prothrombin issue). Not sure what to expect... if I am just going to sit and talk with the dr about my pregnancy/labor with DS, if they want a medical history of X (which will be tricky because I don't know too much), if they are gonna do a physical, or what.... kinda nervous.

any of you been considered a high risk? what was your prenatal care/birth experience like? could you deliver locally or did you have to go to a bigger hospital?

Re: add another appointment...

  • I'm considered high-risk, and I've seen the high risk OB twice. It was mostly just a lot of questions-and-answers (my questions, his answers) and a WAY in-depth ultrasound to check the baby's spine and heart and whatnot. If something had been (detectably) wrong with the baby's heart, I'd have to deliver at a bigger hospital, but I can deliver locally because they've ruled out all but a small number of possible defects. Otherwise I just see my regular OB, but have a few more ultrasounds done. Mostly I just worry because I'm carrying so low and barely look pregnant that the baby's too small or whatever (I've seriously had several friends tell me I don't even look pregnant, and I'm almost 26 weeks), but at the high-risk OB a couple weeks ago they said he was in the 68th percentile so I must be all right.

  • I was considered high risk throughout my entire pregnancy with DD#2 because of DD#1's congenital disease and my PIH.  I saw the high risk dr every 2 weeks  and I saw my regular OB every week from 2nd trimester on.  I had an US every time I went to the high risk OB.  They also did an entire genetic profile and a fetal echo at 28 weeks because a possible ASD (atrial septal defect in the heart). At 28 weeks I went in for weekly NSTs and at 32 weeks I went in twice a week for NSTs. We live very close to a children's hospital (6 mins) and we were supposed to have a specialist on hand at her birth so if need be we would have transported her to the larger hospital.  They attempted to induce me at 38 weeks 3 days but she wanted none of that.  If she wouldn't have come before her due date they would have done a c-section.  However, she came a whole 5 days after the two failed inductions attempts.  Things were chaotic when she was born because she waited for no one and the nurse literally caught her as she fell out:( and as soon as nurse deliverly was screamed every single person on the unit (well it seemed like it) ran into the room including several NICU nurses and the dr on call for the NICU.  It was fun...not.  But she was born perfect and healthy.

  • Thanks ladies! It's a relief to know that I can have a "normal" pregnancy (just with more tests and appointments) and that I can also deliver at the local hospital instead of in the city.

I'm still worried about it being classified as "high-risk" but we shall see what happens Thursday afternoon.
