Those on Solids: Cold Cuts?

At what age can they eat lunch meat such as; cheese, turkey, or ham? I know there were rules about pasteurized foods when pregnant so I didn't know what age is ok.

 TIA.

  • My LO gets bits of shaved turkey from DH's turkey melt sandwich at our favorite restaurant and has since he was about 7 1/2 months old.  He loves it!

  • I have heard cheese is a good first food. As far as lunchmeat, there is the argument that it's high in sodium, but I dont think a bit here and there hurts anything. I wouldnt give it to them everyday....
  • i don't know but the deli lady always offers kyle a piece of cheese, which i politely decline.

You can give it to LO, but lunch meat is terrible for them (and everyone).  Its full of sodium and additives.

I thought (if it's ok) that it would be easy just to get a 1/4lbs of turkey to have in fridge & break it up in bits for him from time to time. Thanks!

ETA: True about sodium..but it wouldn't be a weekly routine.

We'll be avoiding deli meats for as long as possible because of the sodium levels and preservatives.

  • DS gets cheese every day.  He likes string cheese, provel rope cheese and regular shredded cheddar too!  I also give him some deli meats - Braunsweiger is one of his faves...but I only give that to him once or twice per week.  I do give him the Oven Roasted Turkey Breast.  Just check the nutritional facts sheet that's usually located on top of the deli counter.  You can check for sodium levels.  Some grocery stores roast their own meat and slice it fresh...those don't have added preservatives and are fine for LOs.

  • we don't make it a regular thing by any means. However if we are out and about I have given him some vs. a fast food alternative. I would rather pick up a rotessiere chicken and give him that.

  • We use Hormel Natural Choice when we give her cold cuts and I've switched to those for DH and I as well. They have no preservatives, artificial ingredients, MSG or nitrates added to them.
