Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I'm scared to give LO a bath

I just know she's going to scream her head off...she hated the sponge bath i gave her...

I'm a little confused about one thing, do you make the water in the tub soapy or just put the soap on the washcloth?   Then, how do you rinse the baby?  Even if you put the soap on the wc it seems like the water would get soapy

any other last minute tips for me?

  • I don't have any tips about the soap but I just wanted to say that our LO hated the spongebath- I mean like turning purple screaming her head off hated it. But she actually liked the first bath where we were able to put her in the water. No screaming or even crying- even when I washed her hair.

    Good luck!

  • So i figured out the water thing this week.  I put the tub in my tub filled it with water but also had water around the tub.  I used the water from the big tub to rinse her then when I get her out I wipe her off with a wet wash cloth.

so there is hope for me!  :-)

  • My LO would cry until I put a wash cloth on her belly to help keep her warm... and now she loooves bath! And she doesnt like those net things either.. she likes to be IN the water!!!!
  • DS hated baths at first, too, but he's getting used to them now. He was even kicking his feet in the water and sucking on the washcloth last night. He still fusses a bit when I first put him in, but once I put a warm washcloth on his belly he calms down.

He has peed in the water during the bath and after the bath on the towel. At first I was bathing him on the kitchen counter (I couldn't lean over the side of the tub very well in the beginning), and he also peed all over the kitchen. Keeping a washcoth over him also prevents the pee from going everywhere.

  • If her cord stump has come off then you can use more water.  A lot of babies cry because they are naked and wet and that makes them cold.  If you can get her into the water a little bit further then she might be more comfortable.

Ditto the comment about the wash cloth.  Cover her with it and then pour warm water on her and the wash cloth.  If you can make her more comfortable you may find that she absolutely loves a bath.  My DS is so happy in the bath and always has been.

If you are worried about the soap rinsing all the way off then try cetaphyl cleanser.  It is so mild that you don't have to rinse it off.  So if it doesn't all come off you can be okay knowing some is still on her.  But I always used a cup of warm water from the tap to rinse my kids off.  And when we did DS's baths in the kitchen sink we used the spray nozzle on him (very carefully).  Now that he gets his baths in the bathrub we have a showerhead with a hose on it.  So I use that on a gentle setting to rinse him off.  I just have to be careful about the face.

And that whole thing about "they can feel it if you are nervous" is true.  If you are confident she will be more comfortable.  Just remember, you can make the bath short if you need to.

lol, i can picture her peeing in the water, she did during her sponge bath!

  • I bathe him in his tub but at the kitchen sink and I use the detachable faucet head to rinse him...I put the soap on the washcloth...I thought DS would cry but he actually LOVED IT! He peed twice but its par for the course...hope it works out for you.
  • Jake hated the bath initially too. I think he was too cold. try getting the room super warm and bundling her in a heavy towel afterward. helped me a bit. he doesnt freak out anymore.
  • LOL...you sound just like me.  We wre terrified b/c we had finally gotten him to stop screaming with the sponge bath.  And he did scream in the bathtub too.  Then we started making the water a little warmer and using the Bath Buddy we got as a gift.  I think it's from Kohls and it is sorta like a washcloth but it's a frog with arms and legs and we covered him up with that to keep him warm.  Now he LOVES the bath and kicks and splashes and likes the water poured over him.  We have the Fisher Price whale tub and he just loves the little fishy cup poured all over him.  Good luck, I feel your pain!

  • I was scared at first too but now I bathe her about every other day (it helps calm her down in the evening if she's fussy.)  I put the bath on the rug in her room (our bathroom is small) and fill it with about 4-5 inches of water (I use a bath thermometer to make sure the temps ok).  After I put her in the tub I wet a washcloth and put it over her chest/tummy to keep her warm.  Periodically, throughout her bath, I re-wet the washcloth with warm water. I put soap on washcloths (except for her face one), not in the tub.  I rinse her with clean water from a large bowl using a small tupperware container.  I wash her hair by putting a little baby shampoo on a wet washcloth and rubbing it into her hair, then I rinse her hair with water the same way I rinse her body.  Sometimes she cries when I rinse her hair and she always cries when I take her out of the bath (even though I wrap her in a towel immediately).  GL!  Bathtime is actually enjoyable for both of us now.
