sensetive skin/eczema babies

our DD has really dry, rashy, itchy skin... i'm constantly trying new things for her skin... right now we use emu oil and burt's bees buttermilk lotion, plus i changed our detergent to seventh generation baby, which has no scent... anyways, she still has lots of outbreaks, its just a constant battle! i'm just curious what others are doing for their baby's sensitive skin? when its really bad we will used the steroid cream prescribed by the doctor, but i hate to use that too much, i know its not good for her in the long run. what products do other people use?

Re: sensetive skin/eczema babies

  • We use an unscented Aveeno lotion for sensitive skin morning and night and we use Northern Essence Diaper Rash Cream for sensitive skin.  We're lucky that this combo works well for us most of the time.  He has a few patches that come back over and over and we use cortizone cream when needed.  We are also trying a Northern Essence healing salve right now as an alternative to the cortizone.  It seems to be working and DS has not been at all irritated by it.

Do you use the Seventh Generation detergent for all of your laundry or just her clothes?  If you haven't already, it might help to wash everything with that so she won't be irritated by sheets, towels, etc.

Also, we've used an oatmeal bath for DS when his skin gets extra irritated and that has helped, too.

  • i've had good luck with just lanolin on her cheeks.  i also use california baby calendula cream.  have you tried cutting out/back on dairy?

  • Have you had her tested for any sort of allergy?  It took us 8 months to figure out that our son's eczema was caused by the dairy in my BMilk.  He's allergic to dairy and now that he's exclusively on soy formula, his skin is clear.

Just a thought if nothing else works :)

  • hmm, yeah, i guess i should try taking dairy out of my diet... what were the other symptoms of his allergy? how long did it take to see the difference after you eliminated diary?

  • We actually didn't find out about his allergy until I tried to put him on regular, milk based formula at 7 months.  He immediately had an allergic reaction.  On the advice of his allergist I stopped giving him BMilk and went to soy formula.  I thought she was crazy for thinking that the dairy in my milk was causing his eczema but she was right!  I saw a difference in a couple of days.  I EP'd so I just switched him from BM to formula the day after his allergist appt and started weaning from the pump.

I think dairy can linger in your BM for awhile.  I'd give it at least a week to see if there's any difference.

  • We tried several different OTC products to help with DD's terrible eczema and nothing was working, so we finally asked the pedi for a dermatologist rec and have been taking her in monthly.

We were told to change her bath wash (California Baby Super Sensitive) to CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and to start slathering her in CeraVe Moisturizing Cream as soon as she's out of the tub, when she's still wet. We were told to stop using Aveeno and Aquaphor on her (Aquaphor has Lanolin in it, and many kids with eczema react poorly to it). We were also given 2 prescriptions, Locoid for her body to use on flare ups for up to 2 weeks at a time, and a 2.5% Hydrocortizone ointment for her face when it flares up for up to 5 days at a time.

We are still constantly battling her skin issues, but the derm and the pedi have both ruled out a food allergy culprit. Some kids just have bad skin, and hopefully DD will outgrow it by 2 like most tend to do.

  • Our pedi also recommended cutting back on baths and that helped a lot.

  • Our son has had horrible eczema and we figured out it was dairy related when he was in the hospital at 6 months (and was therefore off of BM). Once we cut all dairy out it cleared up. He's 18 months now and can handle some dairy (though he still has occasional flare ups). The best lotion we found was Yes to Carrots body cream/butter. We use the weluda (?) body wash, but don't give him baths very often, because his pedi/dermatologist said the water/soap wouldn't help w/ his dry/sensitive skin. We still have to use benedryl/topical creams (both OTC and prescription) at times, but a lot less than before we figured out the dairy connection.
