Breastfeeding class...not what I expected

I had breastfeeding class today and the majority of the class was going over statistics and reasons why breastfeeding is better for your baby.

I was kind of thinking "Ok, you don't have to sell it to me. Just teach me what to do."

I don't really feel like I know anything I didn't know before which is making me even more nervous because I expected to learn what to do, you know?

Was anyone elses class like this? Or is breastfeeding one of those things you can't learn until you actually do it?

  • You can definitely gain a lot of knowledge before the time comes....I"m sorry your class was so bad.  Have you been able to do much reading (either books or online?) Do you have friends near you that have bf you can ask questions, etc?

  • I didn't take a breastfeeding class prior to DS's arrival, but I would suggest that you call up your local LLL and make contact with a leader there.  They will be an invaluable resource when baby comes and you actually know what your concerns/questions/issues are.  BFing really is very primal and natural and there are A LOT of women/babies who don't need a lot of instruction, but, because society has made it so taboo and because not all babies get it right away, there are times when mom and/or baby need some help getting comfortable with the process.  That is where a good LLL leader/mentor will help get your through.
  • DH and I took a 2 wk BF class and thought it was AMAZING!  Very beneficial - they went over a lot of really key things!

Talk to your OB about lactation consultants - maybe that will help?

  • Sorry your class was like this! I agree; why in the heck are they trying to sell you on it, you obviously want to do it if you're attending their class! I enjoyed my class, but we actually practiced positioning with dolls and got lots of video demonstration on proper latch technique. Our class also went over things like pumping, BM storage, pacifier/bottle use, and how to take care of things like engorgement (cold not heat!) and sore nipples. But that being said, I think the actual act of breastfeeding is something that needs to be learned with your baby. Good luck, and don't be too nervous...the nurses and LC's will help you!
  • Ugh, that sounds crappy.  There are a lot of things that are easier to explain when you actually have your baby, especially when a lactation consultant can actually *show* you what they mean (modesty, thy name is history).  At the same time, the class I took before DD was born was really good at explaining some of what to expect at least, especially in regards to how often they would need feeding at what age, how often to expect poop and what it might look like, etc.

I hope you have some nurses/midwife/whoever that can help you once LO does arrive, that would help a lot.

  • Thanks ladies. I do have a couple of books and I was planning on getting a video. Any recommendations?

Unfortunately since I live overseas the is no LLL where I live but we do have a couple of LC's provided by the base that will come to your house after the baby is born if you are having latching issues.

  • I took a breastfeeding class when PG with my first.  It tried to teach the techniques, but it is something you can't really learn until you can "do" it.  It was like going to a bike riding class where you saw lots of videoes of bike riders and heard about proper form, but never got to try getting on a bike.  The lactation consultants in the hospital are usually very helpful.

LLL is international, there are probably groups near you.  That said, the LC at the Naval Hospital where I had DS was AMAZING, hopefully yours are as wonderful as mine was!

  • I remember mine being something like that. LIke most of what they went over I knew from my own research/friends' experiences. I learned best by hands on experience when my son was born. Our hospital was VERY pro BF so the nurses really took the time to help you. I learned more from them than I did the lactation consultants who came by.

I went to the LLL international website and the only way to look up groups in Italy is to switch to the Italian language site. I can't read Italian so that doesn't help me much and if I did find a group in my area I doubt they'd speak English.

I'll just have to educate myself the best I can with books/videos and see what happens when LO gets here.
