Weaning the paci

We only use the paci at night and naptime, but we have been wanting to wean completely.  Friday night was easy b/c we were coming home late, so we just transfered him from car seat to bed, and he was still asleep.

Saturday night, we pretty much rocked him to sleep, but he woke up at 1am, and I let him CIO, and he went back to sleep.

Now, tonight, I tried to rock him, and he wants nothing of it - so I am just letting him CIO.  Will this get better?!  I have wanted to give in so bad, but I keep telling myself that I will have to start over, so I have refrained.  He is teething, too - so I think that is part of it.

Re: Weaning the paci

  • we had to remove them from the house we wouldn't give in.  I swear it was worse for us than him..  It took 3 day...

  • I have no advice, just want to say good luck!   I'm not ready for that fight!  lol   I figure it's not too bad because the pacifier falls out of his mouth after he falls asleep, so if that is what takes to get him to fall asleep peacefully, than that is fine with me...for now!  :)

  • Good luck!  I'm sorry it's so tough!  We tried weaning around 1 1/2 and it just would not work.  She was a huge paci baby - had to have 1 in her mouth and 1 in each hand to sleep.  Luckily we always kept it either in the bed or in the car.  I finally just waited until she was older and potty trained.  She was 26 months old and I took them all out of the house.  She went to look for them and couldn't find them so I helped her.  We looked all over the house and couldn't find them so I just said they must be lost we'll try again tomorrow. She went to bed just fine and never asked for them again!  I'm not sure if that would work with a younger child - but maybe worth a shot?

  • It will get better. My LO got really sick and congested last month. Since he couldn't breathe through his nose he couldn't suck the paci. After two days he forgot about it! So that was my out. Good luck!

  • I ended up rubbing his back (in his crib) until he fell asleep (which ended up being quick b/c he had been crying so much.  Sad)  We decided that this week is a bad time b/c we are flying on a plane this weekend, and we will prob. want to give him a paci, then, for pressure.  So, maybe next week?  Embarrassed
  • Good luck!  I'm not ready for that one just yet!  He loves his paci!  DS weaned himself from nursing a few weeks ago so I'm hoping he'll do the same with the paci.  I know I probably won't be that lucky but a girl can hope, right?!

It's honestly up to you when you want to wean.  So don't feel rushed if you don't want to do the CIO method.  We didn't until she turned 3!  We followed what V did and it worked perfectly (we mailed it to her baby cousin).  She understood that her baby cousin needed it more than she did because he was a baby.  Anyhow...there was barely any crying (maybe a said..'where's my paci, mommy?"..but that was about it) and she was really ready to give it up on her own.  We had her 3 year dental check up a couple of weeks ago and it went perfectly...dentist complimented us on her teeth and she had no issues.
