Is it wrong to apply for a new job?

I really like the job I'm in, but I'd like to move towards something with better benefits and salary. Do you think it's wrong to apply for a job knowing your pregnant? I wouldn't tell them in the interview because chances are it would ruin any chance I had of getting hired...WDYT?

This is my siggy. Love it.

  • That's really up to you.  You would have to tell them soon though, since your already 9 weeks and would be showing within your 90 day trial period.  That's something to keep in mind, just in case.  Also, will you be working after the baby comes?  How long after the baby will you return?  They can't not hire you or fire you for being pregnant but they can always find a silly reason to do it.  In some states employers don't have to state why a person was fired.  Just food for thought.

  • One thing to keep in mind is that you have to have been working at your job for 12 months in order for FMLA to kick in.  So if you switch now, and it's been less that 12 months before you give birth (which it will be) they don't have to give you any time off, or can fire you for trying to take the time off (FMLA grants you legal protection where they HAVE to hold your position till you come back).
  • I'm applying for jobs now, and don't see a problem with it. I'm a teacher, so it doesn't do me much good, I'll be working 2 months before I'm off for 3 (probably un-paid because it's a new job) - I'm doing it for professional reasons rather than personal though.

A place can't refuse to hire you because you are pregnant - it's illegal, still I wouldn't spill the beans in an interview either. If you are doing it for better salary, great...benefits -- just be careful because pregnancy can be considered "a pre-existing condition" and insurance can get tricky, also you may not get maternity benefits if you haven't worked at a company long enough. Just things to look into and think about. GL!
