Autobiography...

In my post below, one poster was saying it took them almost a month to write it. (Sorry cant remember your name)

Can you explain this more to me? Is there a specific outline or questions they want answered? I was hoping maybe if we had a general outline we could start it sooner rather then later to speed up the process a bit.

Re: Autobiography...

  • Have you started your homestudy process yet? If not, I would wait until your social worker gives you some direction. We interviewed several agencies before deciding who we were going to work with and they all asked for different things in terms of their autobiography format. It would be a shame for you to start it one way and then have your agency request it in an entirely different format! But the previous poster is right - it took us a little more than a month before we were finished with ours.

  • We have not started yet, just called the agency today. We are pretty sure they are who we are going with, just hoping to get the ball rolling.

  • Sure.

We were given an outline, which was basically a series of questions we needed to answer. They are specific to the agency, so it's not worth trying to get this started any earlier.

The reason it took us so long is that a lot of the questions were "touchy feely" and my DH is NOT a touchy feely guy. It took him time to mull over the questions and answer them. I had them done in a week.

  • Thanks, I imagine me answering them and then thinking its not good enough and redoing it, then that repeating a million times because I want it to be perfect.

Can you tell I'm a little nervous?

  • You need to wait until you receive more direction from the person doing your home study.  We were given a specific list of questions.  I think that a month to complete the autobiographies is probably quite long compared to most.  I spent maybe two hours on mine.

    There is no perfect

  • Yes, definitely wait for their outline as I'm sure ever one is unique.

Ours was 4 pages of questions and they range from how'd you guys meet, when did you move out of your house, how were you disciplined as a child, what is your relationship like with your family and friends, what are your expectations of your adopted child, will you tell them they're adopted, what's your house and neighborhood like, and on and on they go lol. It's just exactly like what it sounds, an autobiography. It's alllllll about you and your life. And it can take a very long time to write because it's sort of a tough thing to write about for someone else to read. Hope that helps a lil bit....good luck!
