Can you answer any of these? I figured it was easier to just put all questions in one post like a poll! Our baby girl is almost 3 weeks old. She is 8lbs 8 oz now and drinks 3 ounces of formula at each feed.
1. Did your baby usually fall asleep during or right after feeding at less than 1 month old? If not when did your DC start to? (Ours never does and it makes the 3 am feeding very hard cuz it takes an hour+ to help her fall asleep)
2. At what age does baby start to sleep longer? Ours can do 4 hours during the day but at night we are only getting 2-3 hours of sleep from her at best.
3. When did or will your baby sleep in the nursery?
4. Any colic tips....? Our daughter has terrible gas pains resulting in very painful cries. Some nights are really bad and it's very hard to help her. 2 nights ago she cried for 3 hours with very minimal stoppages, poor baby.
5. How long did someone- husband/parent etc stay with you after baby was born.... before it was just you and baby all day? Tomorrow is my first day alone with DD and I'm nervous and emotional.... but DH needs to work!
6. What do you do at 3 am when baby just needs to be held? I'm getting bored with nick at nite but there's nothing on TV and if I don't do something I'll fall asleep!!
Re: Multiple newborn questions.... any help?
2.she started sleeping longer at about 4-5 weeks. right now she sleeps less during the day, maybe 1 hour naps twice a day, then at night she will sleep 5 hours, get up and sleep another 4 hours.
3.she will sleep in her nursery as soon as my brother brings her crib. right now she is in her pack n play in our room, because we have no monitors and its just easier for now.
4.havent had colic problems really, so cant help there.
5.my mom came for a week, and after that (her 2nd week) my DH was home for two weeks. i was so scared when we first brought her home because i had her alone for the first week. you'll do great, its scary but you can do it:)
6.i actually havent had to do this, but when she is like this i rock her and she knocks out pretty quick.
hope this helps and GL!
2. At what age does baby start to sleep longer? Ours can do 4 hours during the day but at night we are only getting 2-3 hours of sleep from her at best. he really didn't start sleeping longer until about 2 months....
3. When did or will your baby sleep in the nursery? his crib is in my room but he slept in the pnp for about a month when i put him in the crib cold turkey and that's when he started sleeping better
4. Any colic tips....? Our daughter has terrible gas pains resulting in very painful cries. Some nights are really bad and it's very hard to help her. 2 nights ago she cried for 3 hours with very minimal stoppages, poor baby. gas drops gas drops gas drops. EVERY.BOTTLE. bicycle legs all the time, tummy time if you can (ds' gas always used to come out when he did tummy time)...you can also put her on her tummy over your legs to put pressure on her tummy
5. How long did someone- husband/parent etc stay with you after baby was born.... before it was just you and baby all day? Tomorrow is my first day alone with DD and I'm nervous and emotional.... but DH needs to work! my (now ex) bf stayed with me for about 3 days after we came home from the hospital before he went back to work. and my mom was here for half a day, every day for about 2 weeks...you will do better than you think you will!!
6. What do you do at 3 am when baby just needs to be held? I'm getting bored with nick at nite but there's nothing on TV and if I don't do something I'll fall asleep!! put her on your chest while laying on the couch, and it's ok if you fall asleep....i usually put ds between my legs when i sat on the couch so i knew he wouldn't fall off the couch if i fell asleep
2. She did a few 4 hour stretches at about 4 weeks old, but they're still irregular. Sometimes she'll do 3 or 4 other times she'll do 5 or 6.
3. I'm not sure when we'll move her to the nursery. For naps, we'll probably start soon, but for overnight, probably not until at least 6 months.
4. are you breastfeeding? If so, she could have a dairy and/or soy intolerance. That's how DD was until I did an elimination diet. She's totally intolerant of soy, and I can only have limited dairy.
5. DH took 2 weeks off of work. He did need to go in a couple of times and when he did someone else was there. I had a c/s so I wasn't alone with her until after I was cleared to drive.
6. I'm a cha cha guide, so when she won't sleep I do that and will watch whatever I can find on TV or off the TiVo.
2. I would recommend trying to feed her at least every 3 hours during the day (even if you have to get her up) and let her sleep as long as she will at night before you feed her- hopefully this will result in the longer stretches being at night.
3. When we moved into our new house around 2.5 months after she was born.
4. Sorry, no help here.
5. My mom stayed with me for 2 weeks- we were in the hospital for the first week of this time though. My DH took the first week off while we were in the hospital. I had a few days where my mom had other things to do and left us for a good part of the day during the second week. We did just fine on our own- you will too!!
6. In retrospect, I would bring DD to bed with me if she was awake and just wanted to be held at night. That way you can get some sleep, and hopefully she will also!
2. As far as sleep goes it varies by baby. Some babies STTN early, some never do til much later. My DS sometimes only goes 4hrs at night still and other nights he will go 6-8 hours.
3. I will put him in his crib to sleep ta night when he is sleeping through the night more consistantly
4. sorry, didn't have colic.
5. DH stayed home with me for the first week and then after that he had to go back to work. IL's live upstairs so they were home in the afternoons after work and so was DH. Don't be nervouse about being alone, you will be fine, just have confidence in yourself, you can do it!
6. I watch Nick at night too, lol. I also watch MTV sometimes if anything good is on there.
"A baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten, and the future worth living for"
2. DS is awake more during the day now and still wakes up every three hours to eat at night. So we are only getting 2-3 hours of sleep in a stretch at night.
3. DH just put the crib together last night so we're going to start trying this week. So far he has been sleeping with my for the most part.
4. I haven't really had any issues with colic so I can't help here. We have tried the gas drops when he needs them and they seem to help.
5. DH was off for a week and then went back. I was sad that he had to go back, but it was kind of fun to have that bonding time with DS.
6. Nest
congratulations on your baby girl!
1. dd always falls asleep after a feeding, usually even durring the day.
2. both of my dds are different and slept longer stretches at different ages. if she is sleeping longer stretches durring the day, try to play with her and keep her up a bit so that she will save those longer stretches for nighttime.
3. dd is 6 wks and still in her room. we moved 1st dd when she started sleeping through the night and plan to do the same this time.
4. gas drops before every feeding seems to be helping us.
5. dh was home 2wks w 1st dd, but just over 1 wk this time... also depended on what day she was born. try not to worry, it seems like a lot to handle on your own, but it will get much better and seem natural after a little while! getting into a routine (even if it was just for myself and let the baby do as she wanted) helped so i knew i could get a couple things done every day.
6. i also watch nick at night, or will sit/lay down and put her on my chest
He did fall asleep during the day, but like most babies, he had his days and nights mixed up, so he stayed awake longer during the nighttime feedings.
2. At what age does baby start to sleep longer? Ours can do 4 hours during the day but at night we are only getting 2-3 hours of sleep from her at best.
4 hours is really long! Again, her days and nights are mixed up. Totally normal. One way to work this out is to treat her differently during the day and night. At night, try not to talk too much, keep the lights low, room quiet and dark. During the day, sing and talk to her, make sure the blinds are open and she gets a little stimulation . It takes time, but she will turn that around.
3. When did or will your baby sleep in the nursery? We started Ethan in his crib at 3 weeks. The first night he was in his crib, I went in and checked every 10 minutes. That gets better, too. (Of course, I also have a network monitor, so I can see him whenever I have my laptop open!)
4. Any colic tips....? Our daughter has terrible gas pains resulting in very painful cries. Some nights are really bad and it's very hard to help her. 2 nights ago she cried for 3 hours with very minimal stoppages, poor baby.
You can try mylicon or gripe water for her gas pains. Does she cry every night, is it possible to console her at all? If so, she might have either colic or reflux, or it might just be gas. Do you burp her even after she produces a burp? I would burp her a long time (like 10-15 min) after each feeding. Another thing to ask your pedi is about her formula. She might be having a hard time with her formula. (We have changed formulas 4x since I stopped trying to BF) Does she pull her legs up and cry? Or arch her back and cry? Legs means lower gas, so she has to poop or pass gas to relieve it. But arching her back could be reflux. Ask your pedi for advice.
5. How long did someone- husband/parent etc stay with you after baby was born.... before it was just you and baby all day? Tomorrow is my first day alone with DD and I'm nervous and emotional.... but DH needs to work!
I was alone when E was 15 days old, We did fine. Sleep when she sleeps, shower right after she is fed, when she is happy and can sit in her bouncy seat (you will learn to take a shower in 6 minutes!) and get out of the house at least once a day (if you even go get the mail, it is worth it!) so you don't feel isolated. If you are comfortable, it is so easy to take a formula fed baby to the mall at 3 weeks! We went all over when he was that little! (Now he is harder to entertain!)
6. What do you do at 3 am when baby just needs to be held? I'm getting bored with nick at nite but there's nothing on TV and if I don't do something I'll fall asleep!!
Well, we have a DVR, so there is always something to watch! How about renting some videos? Listening to soothing music, etc. IF you do fall asleep, it is unlikely you will go into a deep sleep and cause harm to the baby. Moms actually are wired to be aware of our babies, Notice how easily you wake when she cries...
2. DD started sleeping for 4-5 hours at night when she was almost 3 months old. Now at 5 1/2 months old she sleeps 10-12 hours a night.
3. She started sleeping in her room when she was about 3 1/2 months old. I wasn't ready for her to sleep on her own until then, plus it was easier to have her in the room for night feedings. I guess we waited until she was sleeping for about 6-8 hours at a time.
4. I don't really have any tips for colic or gas. sorry
5. DH left after DD was 10 days old (thank you army) for training and we were alone (all alone) for 6 weeks.
6. Watch a DVD or something on TV. We have DVR so I always have something recorded that I like to watch. I didn't turn on TV at night though because I wanted to keep it dark so DD knew what night was. It was really boring too!
You'll get through this. I think week 3 was our hardest!
1. Ours actually did fall asleep after most feedings at that age, but now the routine is eat, play sleep. That may be where your DC is headed. Make sure you make the 3 AM feedings as boring as possile. No talking, no eye contact, dim lights etc.
2. At about 1 month he went from waking every 2 hours at night to every 3.
3. Ours did from day 1.
4. Rent the Happiest Babby on the Block DVD or google the 5 S's. White noise, swaddling, stomach laying (holding them like a football on their tummy), swinging (get 1 if you don't have 1), and a paci or boob.
5. Mom was here for the first week then we had a week off and then mother in law for a week. I think Graham was about 2 1/2 weeks when DH went back to work and I had him on my own. You'll be fine. You may actually welcome the quiet!
6. I'd go to bed and let Graham sleep on my chest.
