Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did you stop swaddling?

My baby is almost 3 months old and she's been swaddled in one of those swaddleme blankets since she was just a few days old.  I know I need to wein her off the swaddling, but she sleeps so so well at night when she is swaddled.  When she isn't swaddled she wakes up every 2 hours or less.  Is there anything else I can do to help her sleep at night instead of swaddling?  How long did you swaddle your LO for?

Re: When did you stop swaddling?

  • Why do you have to stop if it helps her sleep?

  • I've read you're not suppose to swaddle past 2-3 months.

    Ditto this.

We stopped a couple weeks ago b/c DD would frequently break out, and I was worried about suffocation.  We switch to sleep sacks (the ones that zip up), and she still sleeps like a champ.  I'm a firm believer that your LO will let you know when they are ready.  If LO isn't breaking free, I'd leave it.

  • I don't think swaddling is a habit you have to break.  They just outgrow it on their own.  If she still likes it, keep doing it :)

  • We stopped from day 1 at home because my baby boy HATES to be restricted.  Must be why he kicked the crap out of me from the inside! :-)

I agree with PP though, if you LO is not breaking out and putting themselves into suffocation risk and it is how they sleep best I don't see why you should not continue.

  • No need to stop if it's working for you and your baby. My son is still little (and swaddled), but we swaddled my daughter for quite some time longer. I seem to remember it was until 5-6 months. We used the miracle blanket and she never broke out of it. It's perfectly ok to swaddle your 3 month old as long as he/she is getting lots of unswaddled time when awake - tummy time, floor play, etc.
  • I stopped at 2 months because she was fighting it and it was getting warmer out.

  • DS will be swaddled for as long as he sleeps well like that. I swaddled my neice (I was her nanny) until she was about 6 months old. No weaning necessary.
