3rd Trimester

OMG, that was SOOOO uncomfortable!

I just had my 36 week appointment, and I'm 1cm dilated (yay), but that internal was HORRIBLE!!! I almost cried. It's still sore down there, but I'm sure that's normal...the Group B Strep test was alright, but just the pressure of the other part was miserable! Anyone else have a bad internal?

  • Sorry to ask such a TMI question but what do they do in the internal?

Well, she stuck her fingers up there to feel what she could feel, as far as how far my cervix is open, etc. She also was feeling the baby's head, seeing how thin the cervix was...she didn't use a speculum (sp), just her fingers...but when she was pushing around in there, the pressure was almost unbearable!

Also, one thing I didn't know, the GBS test is not just done in the vagina, it's also done in the uh, rear...eeek..! Wish I woulda known that was gonna happen! lol

Its the same thing that they do at the end of a pap where they just use their fingers inside you to feel your cervex, mine have never really hurt badly, just a little uncomfortable sometimes depending on who does it.
  • Yay! I can't wait until mine next week. Huh?

  • Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that your internal didn't go well!  I'm still kind of uncomfortable from mine too - had my 36-week exam today like you.  But at least you're 1 cm dilated!

Did your LO drop for you?  I heard that if LO hasn't dropped yet, then it might make the internal more painful because the doctor has to really poke far up.

Hang in there and hope your next one isn't so bad and shows some progress.

Oh goodness, all these fun things to look forward to!!  Oh well, it's all worth it in the end... thanks for the info!  Sorry you had such an uncomfortable time :(

Pregnancy Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Hello?
  • My first internal was pretty uncomfortable as well.  It wasn't my regular OB, so I'm hoping when I see her Thursday it won't be as bad.  I think some doctors just plow through with no regards to patient comfort.
  • Right there with you.  I just had my first one today at 35 weeks.  OUCH. OUCH. OUCH. I felt like her whole arm was up there!  And I had the strep test too.  That was a piece of cake compared to the internal!!  I feel ok now but I am definitely having some spotting which she said was normal (I'm a bleeder anyway after my annual appointments so I figured this would happen).

  • I didn't have any internals at appointments because my water broke 4 weeks early.  That was my least favorite part of labor (beside the GBS antibiotics, be glad you made it to the test!) and boy was I glad when I got that epidural.  I would arch off the table and be near tears each time.

Not to sound scary, lol.  At least it is over with quick and it is only a few hours out of your life. :)

  • Eek, I had mine last Thursday and I was definitely sore for a couple of days! I wouldn't say that it was "bad," but it was definitely not comfortable. I will say the GBS wasn't half as bad as people make it out to be. Hope you feel better!
  • my first one was uncomfortable too. for my second, I asked my doctor to go really slowly and it hurt less. try that next time!

Ummmmmmmm my GBS test was strictly vaginal.... lest i was seriously out of it and happened to have not noticed but I sincerely doubt that. I'm not sure what the norm is i've never heard of it being rectal before.......

  • My GBS test was both vaginal and rectal.  Fun.  Stick out tongue

  • This is only one of the reasons that I've declined any internals thus far. There's no real medical purpose for them yet, and my OB's curiosity is not worth my discomfort. :)

Maybe you didn't notice. The GBS test swabs both places. It's not internal, just a quick swab across your anus, nothing intense.

  • I have had 4 HORRIBLE internals because my cervix is high, and tilted still. Everytime I have one it feels like she is trying to reach my tonsils...lol.

  • ugh, I have had two internals so far because my Dr wanted to check me before I traveled since I have been losing my mucus plug and have a million and one BHs a day. I felt like her entire arm was up there (since obviously baby hasn't dropped yet) Ah, the joys of pregnancy :)

  • No internals yet for me :)  yay for that one.  I remember getting an internal in the hospital when I was in labor with DD.  A nurse did it.  I don't know what she was doing but she wasn't doing it again that was for sure.  It depends on who is doing it - she was the only one that hurt.

No, it's possible to have a GBS test that was strictly vaginal.  Mine was.  I had read how some GBS tests include a vaginal and rectal swab, so I was waiting for the doc to go to the back door...he never did.

  • I'm really sorry to hear you had that experience. I think it really depends on your care provider. My MW is so gentle, I didn't even really feel her doing anything. Take care and get lots of rest!

  • I just got back from my first one and yes... it was SO uncomfortable and it felt like her entire arm was in there. But I wouldn't describe it as actual pain, just super super uncomfortable.

This is what I'm dreading! *crosses legs shut* I've always had a really high cervix - at annual appointments they had to use the long speculum and its always been very uncomfortable. The couple internals I've had during this pregnancy were NOT fun to say the least!

  • Sorry you had a bad experience.  I had to have 2 last week within several hours when my doctor sent me to L&D (turns out I was dehydrated).  I had been dreading them and when they told me they were going to check my cervix, I cringed.  They were uncomfortable for sure, but I wouldn't call them painful.  I am certainly not looking forward to the next one, but at least I know what to expect now.

  • I had one last Thursday and HATED it. I also wasn't supposed to have one until this week, and he was doing it because he was concerned about LO, so I wasn't exactly relaxed. All that for barely 1 cm.
  • My first two internals weren't bad. The last one I had, the guy was rough. It didn't hurt as much as it was super uncomfortable and I ended up bleeding quite a bit from it. Like soaking through to my jeans bleeding. I'm hoping tomorrow my internal isn't that bad haha
