Babies: 9 - 12 Months

XP: For those that have travelled with baby

I posted this on 3-6, but I hope you ladies have some input as well.

We are going to Las Vegas next month with baby. She will be almost 7 months by then. I've never been to Vegas, but my DH mentioned that it is easier to get around in taxis rather than drive your own car to the strip (we're renting a house in the outskirts of town) So my question is this: do I need to take the car seat for the taxi??? Can she ride in the taxi without one, and have her in a baby bjorn instead? I'm just wondering if there's a way to not lug around with the carseat. But if I have to bring it along I will. Please don't flame, this is my first time travelling with baby. TIA!

Re: XP: For those that have travelled with baby

  • im wondering the same thing too ... ive heard of people using the bjorn and then the mom being strapped in with a seat belt.

  • Not sure but when we traveled LO was in an infant seat and we used the snap and go frame and it worked out well (so that way we had some where to put baby stuff and did not physically have to carry the seat around...) but we did not use a taxi, just friend's vehicles

  • I don't know about taxis, but I know with other forms of public transportation (buses, trains, shuttles, etc) baby does not need to be in a car seat.  I would imagine the law is the same for taxis, since logistically it would be pretty difficult to install/uninstall a car seat every time you use a taxi.  Whether you are comfortable with that is up to you.

I would call a taxi company in Vegas and ask, they would know better than anyone on here.

  • It is definitely easier to get around Vegas in cabs and the Deuce (bus).  I think the car seat laws pertain to your own personal vehicle and they aren't required by law in rental cars or taxis.  However, I think I would be too worried about LO's safety in a car without a car seat and I would drive to the strip.  Parking at most of the hotels is free so then you can just leave the car seat in the car and bring the stroller, just in case you decide to use that instead of the Bjorn.  It's nice having a place to dump all the baby stuff so you don't have to carry it all around, just in case you need something.  The stroller might be a better option shade-wise for LO - it's hot in the desert already and walking on the strip is super hot because of all the pavement so you'll probably want her in the shade as much as possible.  Have a fun trip!
  • I'm pretty sure the carrier in a car, even a cab is illegal, it would be here anyways. I have heard of people doing this in other countries like India and Mexico where the laws are different, a when in Rome approach.

I still am not sure I would do it, scares me too much.

I would do the carseat, you can buckle it in without the base and use a snap and go frame. As PP said you will probably find the stroller handy anyways.

  • yeah taxis are def exempt too. i wonder if the bjorn idea really protects LO god forbid an accident happens?

I would be way too nervous to have LO in a taxi without a carseat.  Would you do that in your car?  If you wouldn't, then don't do it in a taxi!  I don't think whether it's illegal would be my concern.  (not flaming, just giving my opinion!)

  • Thanks for your input ladies. I think I'll just talk DH into renting a car, that way the baby is safe, and we can leave the car seat in the car and just use the stroller.
  • if you're using an infant carseat and a snap and go, it's no problem with a taxi.  just belt the carseat in and put the snap and go in the trunk of the taxi.  i did the same a couple weeks ago.  takes seconds.
