Where is your easel?

DH doesn't think we should keep it in the living room, which is where most of her things are minus her bookshelf and stuffed animals, those are in her bedroom.  We don't have a playroom.  He thinks we should keep the easel in the computer room and take it out when we're going to use it.  Oh, we keep her crayons, coloring books, stickers, play-doh, things like that, in the hall closet.

What do you think?  Should I have a designated easel time during the day?  Right now I know when she wants to color or play with her stickers, because she tells me or goes to the closet.  This easel is going to be a big hit, I'm sure.  Today was the first day she played with it and she loved it!

Thanks!

Re: Where is your easel?

  • Our easel is in our living room because - even though we have a toy room she loves to be with us in the living room.  So I thought she would play with it a lot and left it in the living room.  It doesn't bother me that it is in there but she doesn't play with it a whole lot.  So I would kind of agree with your DH and put it some place where she can play with it if she wants or it can be brought out for special easel times.

  • Ours is in the basement, but you've just reminded me that I should bring it back upstairs!  We were painting down there this winter (it's unfinished) but now we can paint outside. :)

We do have a playroom, but if we didn't, I'd probably keep it in the kitchen.  Just seems like there's less to get messy in there.

  • Ours is in our livingroom and is accessible to DD all the time. She plays with it multiple times a day and has since she got it for Christmas. I keep markers, crayons, colored pencils and stickers at the easel.

We bring it outside when she paints.

Our livingroom kinda looks like a TRU, but I don't mind because I'd rather her toys be accessible.

  • We have an area by the kitchen (which I think is supposed be where you put your 'breakfast table' but we don't) and just have her easel permanently set up there.  It's like her "art nook."  It gives her something to do when we're in the kitchen.  We've got a plastic mat thing down underneath the easel area just in case.  And we also kind of have a playdoh station/table thing there.  DD is really big into that kind of stuff right now so it's more convenient for us to just have it permanently out.
  • It was in our living room for awhile, but then we got a little picnic table thing and it had to go in the toy room.  She doesn't really play with it much, but she's not a crafty girl.
  • Its in our bedroom right now.   We spend most of the time in there, since we don't have a tv in the living room right now.  She doesn't play with it very much, just here and there to color.  When we paint, I take it to the kitchen with a towel on the floor.

  • I had DH attach a wooden beam across the top of it and install a giant hook on the wall of her playroom, high out of DD's reach so we can fold it and hang it up out of the way.  I take it down during art time.  All of her paints, playdough, scissors, glue, etc are in a wall cabinet also high up on the wall out of her reach.
  • He has an dry erase/easel/chalkboard combination and it's in his playroom.  I leave it up all the time, but he is only allowed to have markers/crayons/chalk while supervised.  I keep those in little plastic containers in the playroom up where he can't reach them.
  • Right now it's in the playroom, but we don't spend a ton of time in there.

DD loves coloring and I was actually thinking of moving it to the kitchen (by the kitchen table) so that she could use it more often and as she pleases.

Ditto all of this except, when he paints, we just leave it in the living room too.  We've only ever used fingerpaints on the easel.  We have hardwood floors and the paints are washable...Oh, and DS is a bit of a neat freak with the paint so I don't worry about it too much.  He only wants one color of paint per each finger.  He's a nut.

  • ours is in the kitchen - but we have a great room concept so very close and within site to living area...we put in kitchen to have over wood instead of carpet and I can see her from living area and kitchen when cooking.
