Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

if you've flown with 16 month old...

i have a few questions-i am taking my first airplane trip with my LOs and want to know:

what is the best way to warm up a bottle before the flight takes off?  should i buy one of those battery operated warmers?

will they allow me to bring bottles with milk in an insulated bag?  i want the kids to have their bottles during take off.

any other suggestions on how to fly with 16 month olds twins and not lose my mind would be great :)

we are going to turks and caicos for my sister's wedding-only a 3 hour flight so i'm hoping for the best!

thanks!!

  • We took DS on a 16 hour flight at 16 months.  Most of the coffee shops in the airport will make you warm whole milk.  Starbucks has a level called "baby hot" that we usually do.  The flight attendants also can usually hook you up.  We also brought tons of snacks--mums, cheerios, etc. And toys/books. Colorforms and color wonder markers were the big winners for my LO. Good Luck and have fun!

  • Well I flew with an 11 month old and my only advice is to bring snacks and lots of them, preferably something new.

We flew out of chicago and I had my sippy's with milk in my diaper bag and they went thru the scanner and that was that.  On the way home though, they took me aside and had to check the sippy's with some sort of tool.  So I think that just depends on the airport.

Oh and is there something at home that occupies them for a long period of time? My dd loves to sort thru laundry, like for an hour, so on the way home I packed her diaper bag full of her dirty clothes and she sat there and went thru them for about 45 min!

ETA: Oh and enjoy! Turks and Caicos is absolutely breathtaking!

    - Find a Dunkin Donuts in the airport (or any coffee bar) and ask for a large cup of HOT water.  Pour half out and stick the bottle in to warm it up.  Then you can toss the rest of the water and the cup.

    - Get yourself a thermos.  They will not let you bring milk through security (formula & BM, yes).  Then go to one of the stores inside the terminal and buy milk to fill the thermos and the bottles.

Change their diapers just before you have to board the plane.  Also, get some plastic diaper covers (if you use disposable diapers) from Wal-Mart.  They come in a 4-pack from Gerber and cost under $2.  Put them on over their diapers when you change them before getting on the plane and you won't have to worry about possible leaks through their clothes.  They're reusable (just rinse out in the sink and let air dry) but cheap enough that you can toss them if you want.

  • I flew 6 times in the past 2 months and we took milk with us on every flight - if it's in a sippy or bottle already, they just test it at security.  I also brought extra cartons of milk (the weird milk that doesn't need refrigeration) with me and no-one blinked.  I put all my liquids in a big ziplock and sent them through separately each time and they all made it through.

Good luck with your flight - it'll go really quickly!

Oh - and stickers were a big hit with my son on the plane - especially once I showed him he could stick them on my face and arms.  That amused him for a looong time.

  • I downloaded Mickey Mouse Club house and Sesame Street onto my Ipod and DD watched it until she fell asleep.  It was a big treat for her to have my Ipods ;).  Also, have 2 sippie cups for each... one for taking off and one for landing.  The sucking helps them pop their ears and relieve any pressure during those times.  My daughter screams if she doesn't have  a cuppie during those times. GL!
