XP: Lose fingernail?

I posted this on 12-24, but thought you guys might have more insight with your older LOs: DS fell about a week ago and almost completely ripped the nail off his pinky finger.  We took him to the ER and everything is fine - no breaks and it doesn't even bother DS.  Anyway, I took him to the pedi today for a followup and the Dr. said DS's nail might never grow back.  Has anyone had this happen?  The ER doc said it would be fine and the nail would grow back.  I'm not sure who to believe (although I know which one I want to believe).  I guess there's a possibility either way, but I was looking for maybe anyone who had this happen?  I'm just worried it will never come back.....

Re: XP: Lose fingernail?

  • DH lost a fingernail about 2-3 months ago. He smashed it really badly and the nail fell off. It's growing back now and it looks pretty normal. I hope your LO has the same outcome!

  • Thanks!  I hope so too.  Some reassurance from others is helpful :)
  • My son lost his nail when he was the same age as your son. It grew back and is completely normal. I can't even tell which finger it was now.
  • i lost the nail of one of my toes and when i pulled it, there was a tiny nail under it.. i think it will grow back! just have to be patient and wait!
  • It depends on if the nail bed is damaged or not. I smashed my thumb several years ago and the nail took months to come back normal but it did. I had several ugly nail in between though. Time will tell.
