Silly question about frozen meals?

I saw the post yesterday about making meals and freezing them. I thought I would try a few, my question is when your ready to eat these meals do you have to thaw them out before cooking or do you just throw them in the oven frozen? I know this is a dumb question but I have never made a frozen dinner from scratch so if it doesn't have directions on the side I'm lost...LOL!

Re: Silly question about frozen meals?

  • We store most of our stuff in plastic, so we don't use the oven.  If it's something you can stir, you can take it out of the freezer, stick it in the microwave, and cook it in small intervals/stirring as you go to break up large 'frozen' chunks.  It takes much less time to nuke and you don't have to stir if you take it out the night before (in the fridge) or leave it on the counter starting that morning.  We don't use the oven much to reheat, it's too much of a PITA, but if we do lasagna or something we take it out the night before and thaw it because I can't imagine going straight from freezer to oven is good for glass or porcelain containers.

  • When cooking or reheating a frozen meal I find it easiest to move the meal I am going to eat the next day from the freezer to the fridge so it can slowly thaw overnight.  Then I let it sit on the counter for 30 minutes before putting it in the oven.
  • Thanks! I'm going to the grocery store today, I thought I'd start making a meal or 2 every time I go grocery shopping which is about every 2 weeks and see what I can do. It was a little hard to cook every night with DD so I'm gonna see if this will help.
  • If you need some simple recipe ideas let us know.  I have been making stuff like BBQ Pulled pork. Pork Chilli Verde etc in my crock pot since it is easy to just throw it together and then freeze the leftovers for after the baby comes.  Also thinks like Chili or Soups are good because again they usually make a ton and you can freeze the extras.
