how many of them are with cereal? our pedi said 2 of DD's 3 solid meals should have cereal. we've been doing this for the past couple of weeks, and since we started DD has been constipated. we give her prune juice w/water, it helps for the next poop, but that's it. then it's back to being constipated. i think it's all the iron in the oatmeal that's doing it so i'm thinking of cutting back to just one meal a day w/ cereal. any other suggestions, or how are you feeding your LOs?
TIA!
Re: if your LO eats 3 solid meals a day
Our pedi told us the exact same thing. So, I try to give E oatmeal in 2 out of 3 meals.
I tend to think that it's constipating her also ...
I keep wondering when the "you need to include cereal in most meals" stops?
I mean ... eventually it has to stop right?
This happened with our DS. He was getting rice cereal about 3 tbsp. twice a day. I cut back slightly by one tbsp each meal and increased the fruit. I was intially just mixing it with formula but with the iron component and the solids he was getting constipated. So this is what I do now:
Breakfast: Mix 2tbsp rice cereal with an 1 1/2 oz formula and 4 ounces of pears. He also gets 2oz prunes.
Lunch: Yogurt
Dinner: Chicken meal/turkey meal with veggies and rice cereal mixed with formula and pears.
As he goes through growth spurts or his sleep starts to get broken I gradually increase his rice cereal and solids. He also takes about 21-24 ounces a formula a day.
His BM's are much better like soft serve ice cream and he doesnt strain as much as he used to. I feel like Pears really help. Someone told me that anything that starts with "p" are good poop foods....haha.
sorry that just made me LOL! DS has had that too, once we started giving him peaches he hasn't had poop nuggets :-)
Make a pregnancy ticker
YAY for peaches! we're starting them tomorrow.
the hard poop, i call it a nugget, DH calls it a biscuit
2 - breakfast and dinner.
I give a bit of water with lunch to help move things along.
Our pedi said that the reason for giving the cereal twice a day is that LO's need the iron to help with their development.
My pedi never gave us a suggestion on what to feed either of my DS so we started with rice cereal only b/c of the consistency and then only used in the in am only or to thicken foods. Now he only has cereal if I don't have time to make him something else.
He gets his iron from vitamins so I don't worry about it at all. The days I've given DS cereal 2x in a day he does tend to get constipated so I just make sure he gets more veggies or fruit for the next few consecutive meals.
