My diaper pail reeks!

It makes the whole room smell bad!  I currently go 2-3 days between washes, because thats how long it takes for me to use enough diapers to feel like I'm not wasting water/energy.  I use prefolds and a few GMS/B4s and 3 BG 3.0s (nighttime).

I use All Small and Mighty Free Clear Military... cold rinse, hot was/cold rinse cycle, cold rinse.  Dryer dry except covers, BG shells and pail liner.  I have been wiping my pail out with vinegar between loads and using TTO inside them.... and the smell is overwhelming even before 24 hours is up!  Do I need to strip?  (DS has been in this size PF for 2 months, he's been in the GMs for about 4)

Re: My diaper pail reeks!

  • When my pail was reeking, it was because I added BioKleen/Bac-out to the routine, and another time when I was using too much detergent.  Both times, after a hot/cold wash cycle like usual, I put the washer on hot and added a big scoop of Oxi-clean and a very small amount of detergent, let it fill and let it soak for a couple of hours, then finished the run (hot/cold) and then a cold addl. rinse and dried as usual.  This got the stink out without super complex stripping.

  • The pail reeking like that isn't from detergent buildup, it's from the diaper not getting clean enough. You're smelling bacteria - not sure exactly how that works, but it's the best I can explain it :-)

We had this problem forever until I finally figured out that it wasn't buildup. I stipped the diapers constantly and it never got better. I recommend using something like oxi clean free (fixed it for us) or bac out (never tried that personally) and also trying stronger detergent. We switched to Tide and it's made a world of difference...just have to rinse a few extra times to get it all out in our front loader.
