Baby "swim" classes?

Jackson LOVES the water and I'd like to take some Mommy 'n' Me swim classes this spring/summer.  Nothing intense, just some fun together time in a heated pool.  Any recs?

  • We love classes at the YMCA. The parent child classes are a great introduction to the water and the pool is heated! :)

I agree-- that YMCA location is fantastic, but just make sure you get a good instructor.  (Fjaril seems to have a good one for H.)  We took classes at that Y and we loved the instructor W had when he was an infant. She was an older woman who was very good.

However, we were so unhappy with last summer's instructor that we quit attending about halfway through the sessions we'd paid for.  She was very young (high school student, I think) and all she did was play the whole time.  There was no class-like structure with no swimming-type activities at all. There were no kicking, blowing bubbles, climbing out of the pool, etc. type activities as he'd had with the infant class.  It was just playing with tub toys. And that was it.  I taught W more in our club pool than he learned in that class last summer.

So yeah, that Y is great, but make sure you get a recommended instructor.  I really wish I could remember the name of the one we had summer before last, but I can't.  She's been teaching for a very, very long time.

  • kimbie, I'm sorry you had a sucky instructor! I think they've buckled down lately and al the classes seem structured.

At our Y there are two people that do the little ones, one is much older (grandma age) and she was fine for our first class and one that is prolly upper 40's maybe early 50's and she is hands down awesome.

I watch the other classes when we go during the week and the other instructors seem to follow procedures etc.

     :)

I'll bet the instructor you describe is the one we had for the Shrimp (infant) class.   She really was awesome.

I know they changed swim directors last summer and there were a lot of unhappy families.   I'm happy to know they've shaped up because that YMCA is awesome.  It's SO close to my job, but so very far from my home.

  • Nitro in Cedar Park off of 1431 is awesome.  They do Mommy & Me classes, and then do lessons as they get older.  It makes for an easy transition in a place that they're comfortable.  We've had friends try lots of different classes for lessons, and they've all ended up at Nitro in the end.  We've been at Nitro for 3 years, and my DS LOVES it.  He started at 2, and he's learned so much.  Most of my nightmares involve children falling into pools or bathtubs, so it was something that we wanted to start early!  It's always been my biggest fear - call me paranoid, but it certainly makes us more aware.

If you dont mind me asking, how much is it?  With the new water park coming, I want to make sure that the babies are very familiar with water and water safety.

  • Nirto is $56  a month and the Y is $36 a month for non members and $25 for members.

ditto the Y we take classes with fjaril and a few other family friends and love it.

  • We just went to a waterbabies orientation class on Saturday at Emler on Anderson Mill and had so much fun! We are definitely signing up for a class. Unfortunately it's more expensive than the Y  Sad
