For those who roomed in at hospital, what was in your bag...

seeing as I wont be wearing hospital clothes dh and I both need clothes for the hospital, our room has a shower. I just am curious as to what I should pack in my bag. For baby boy I just have two outfits as I am not sure how big he will be(and a carseat of course) but what else do I want or need?

Thanks ladies

Re: For those who roomed in at hospital, what was in your bag...

  • we had a room provided for us at the hospital, but decided to use it during the day and stay at the hotel that was connected to the hospital by a skywalk.

We packed-loungewear (sleepwear:sweats, tshirt etc), clothing for two-three days, books, ipod, magazines, camera, video camera, shampoo, conditioner, hairdryer. I would probably bring your own pillow, maybe even a blanet, towels, wash cloths etc...hospital stuff isn't always the softest etc.

Oh and usually the bed is a single bed, so husband will probably be sleeping in the recliner or a rollaway bed if one is available..unless they are giving you a double bed room.

  • As far as clothing goes, i would recommend layers; in my experience hospitals tend to oscillate between drafty and warm and stuffy.

  • We brought our laptop, camera, videocamera and a journal. Also, our own pillows and bathroom stuff. I didn't bring towels but I wish I would have because the towels there were horrible. We also brought a bunch of outfits for the baby. I did bring books and stuff but honestly, we were so enamored, we spent most of the time just holding him and staring at him :-)

I don't know where you're adopting from, but we were in Kansas and had to leave the hospital early one morning to go meet with the judge since we don't have to go back for finalization. I didn't really have an appropriate outfit for that.

    GL!

  • We weren't able to room in at the hospital (hospital didn't have enough rooms) but we stayed at a nearby hotel. We packed: clothes for a couple days, just in case, toiletries, camera, batteries, extra batteries, battery charger, phones, phone chargers, list of phone numbers of everyone we wanted to call (so it would be easier), 2 outfits (I had actually bought 3 - a preemie one and a boy one and a girl because we didn't know if it was a boy/girl but then we found out that morning) in different sizes, diaper bag with a few diapers, wipes, and bottles, extra empty bag (the hospital gave us A LOT of things to take home - information, extra formula, diapers, etc.), a gift/letter for birthmother, flowers, a journal so we could write down as much as possible, and a laptop.  I think that was everything!

  • Make sure to take your own towels and pillows.  The bath towels in our room were the size of a hand towel. No joke.

You  might want to take some movies, a deck of cards, etc.  Although we "roomed in" at the hospital, DD spent no time in our room.  The BM decided that she wanted every minute with the baby before relinquishment.  We visited fairly often, but we had a lot of down time.  If we wouldn't have had DS with us, we would have been bored.  Boredom in an adoption situation can be a dangerous thing, as your mind starts to wander.

  • Thanks ladies!!

Crystal-BM doesnt want to see the baby even, we have been given permission to hold both hospital braclets as she wants NOTHING to do with us or baby after birth, so assuming thats the way it stays he will be in our room the whole time...so thats what we are hoping for!!!!
