R/P from 3-6: Tax Question

Does anyone know the penalties for filing late?

I was trying to complete my taxes before we left for vacation tonight, but I just realized I didn't bring DD's social security card with me for our temporary move.  I don't have her number memorized and I can't find it on any of the paperwork we did bring home.

I'm frantically searching the internet to find a way to file for an extension, but I'm not having any luck.  We return on the 16th.  Am I going to get charged out the wazoo for filing a day late?

  • I was under the impression that you would be fine unless you owe money.  If you are just getting a refund, I don't think you get hit with a penalty for being one day late.  That being said, I am not an accountant.  :)

  • I filed for an extension online last year. There wasn't a penalty, but I had to pay like $30 to file the extension. Hope that helps.
  • Can you file for an extension? Then you have until October. I would do that ASAP.

You wouldn't happen to recall the process for filing for an extension, would you?  I was just on the IRS website and all I found was a printable form that had to be mailed in.  I'm afraid if I do that, they won't get it in time.  Maybe I'm overlooking a way to do it online.

  • We use Turbo Tax, and I'm sure it can help you file for an extension.

When you mail your taxes in they have to be POSTMARKED by the 15th, so if you mail the extension application tomorrow I think you'll be ok.

  • That little form (literally it's like a tiny slip of paper you send in) is the right thing for an extension.  Super easy.  It will get there in time, just has to be post marked by Thursday.  I used to fill out a bunch of those and drop them in the mail for clients on April 15th every year!
