Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Kale?

Anyone know at what age you can introduce kale?  I'm thinking probably the same time as spinach (10 months) but I can't find anything specifically on kale.  I bought a farm share so I'll be getting local produce for summer/fall and I've heard that generally there's lots of kale

Re: Kale?

  • Hmmm.  Now I found a site saying that spinach and kale can be introduced at 6-8 months

  • My guess is that it's prob similar to spinach -BUT- kale is a much "tougher" green, so you'd have to puree it really well to make sure there are no "strings"  LO can choke on. Do you have any cookbooks to help you? We get a farm crate and I found that Deborah Madison's "Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone" and Madhur Jaffrey's "World Vegetarian" were excellent for "new ideas" and "what do I do with this??. We loved the quality of our crate and it definitely got us eating the "right" amount of produce!

Nope, no cookbooks yet, but the farm does email out recipes and articles on eating seasonally.  I'm so excited :)

  • smilelari... what is a farm share?  Is that like a CSA where you pick up organic fruits and veggies.

  • cool!  I love our CSA.  We just started getting meats from them as well.  Eggs, Chicken and Beef.  We stopped the veggies for a few months until summer when the fruits are in season here.  The taste is 1,000 times better then the market.  So excited to start the veggies again just in time for LO to start eating solids.  FUN FUN!

  • I love my CSA! I can't wait to introduce LO to all the veggies we get :)  I'm going to freeze batches so I have the good stuff even if she's not ready for it until it's out of season.
    bishes be crazy
  • I would also assume it's like spinach.

Have you looked at wholesomebabyfood.com? I really trust their guidelines and I followed it for DD1. They have some great recipes too! I bought a couple books but always ended up using the website instead..

Anyway, I'm just looking at it right now and it does mention the nitrate issue like w/ spinach and carrots. So you'd want to hold off for that reason until 7 or 8 months.

    "

Root vegetables such as carrots, beets and broccoli all contain nitrates though at a much lower level than do the leafys. Leafy vegetables include spinach, cabbage or other greens like Kale.

For spinach, its nitrate levels may actually increase with improper storage,so it's recommended around 8 months old."

HTH!  There are some recipes (mixed w/ other foods) listed too if you search the site :) We have an organic delivery service and we do get a lot of kale too. I love it! I don't know why I never thought to puree it for the baby. Great idea :)
