How do you know what's pinkeye and what's allergies?

Aside from seeping eyes or the gunk that comes with severe cases of pinkeye are there any other telltale signs?  My daughters eyes (mostly just one of them) is swollen and pink.  But not bloodshot.. just kind of pink all over.

I thought at first it was allergies. And I'm still not sure.  But after asking my MIL for her opinion she's not sure either.

Assuming the worst, should I rush her to a doc-in-the-box tomorrow or can this wait until Monday?

Re: How do you know what's pinkeye and what's allergies?

  • My youngest had a very atypical looking pinkeye recently.  One of her eyes was just kind of gunky for a few days. It wasn't pink or bloodshot at all.  I finally called the pedi's office & they decided to Rx her a broad spectrum antibiotic over the phone, just to cover anything it could be.  The RN I talked to said it could be pinkeye even if it doesn't look pink.  About 5 days later, my oldest woke up with a raging case of obvious pinkeye.  What's strange is that they had told me one is no longer contagious once they're on the antibiotic for 24 hours.  But my oldest took 5 days to get it?  I still don't understand.  But I'd call the pedi- they may just Rx something without you having to go in.

  • Our office will just call you in a RX if pink eye is suspected.
  • Pink eye can be both bacterial or viral. Good luck!

  • I took DS on Friday for this.  He had an eye infection b/c he'd been rubbing his eyes from his allergies.  We got antibiotic eye drops and his eye was better in 1 day.
