Anyone waking up with numb hands/arms?

I woke up three times last night and my right arm/hand was completely numb each time. I was sleeping on my left side each time.

Google says it could be due to swelling or carpal tunnel but I'm not swollen at all and I don't think it's carpal tunnel...

just curious if anyone else has had this happen.

  • are you laying your arm over your head while asleep (I know you probably don't know since you were sleeping) but you could be putting your arm in an awkward position that causes blood flow to be limited.  I fell asleep (not pregnant) with my arm over my head one night and it was numb the next day.

  • This happens to me all the time, I always wake up with numb arms and hands but usually it happens on the side that I am sleeping on.  This morning my right hand was numb but I was sleeping on my right side.  I don't really know why it happens though.  Sorry.
  • I have this happen if I'm laying on my sides sometimes, usually if I'm laying on the couch. It feels almost like my arms and hands fall asleep quicker-I have read it's from the increase in blood and fluid in your body, that it gets compressed easier if you lean on your hands or arms.

  • Nope, it was at my side. If it was only once I wouldn't be weirded out, that happens sometimes, but 3 times was enough to be a little concerned

  • With my last pregnancy, this happened all the time.   My Dr. said is like a pregnancy carpal tunnel type thing and that it will go away after I delivery the baby.    And....it did, never had a problem with it since.    Just another weird pregnancy symptom:)
  • Yep, I've had this once or twice.

Plus, I work retail pharmacy, so I'm on my feet at work, and every once in a while my left thigh will get really cold like circulation is limited. So weird.

  • I have been getting this for the last few weks.  I asked at my last appt, and he said carpal tunnel during PG is very common. He said not to shake or wiggle my wrist to "make it stop" because that can make it worse.  I guess carpal tunnel is an issue with the nerves.
  • i do! every night :( it's from sleeping on my side. i work for a chiropractor and i am pretty much giving myself a pinched nerve because i sleep on arms/hands and shoot them up over my head.

  • I get that a lot too.  Although it's been better the last week or so.  Always happens to my right arm when I sleep on my left side.
  • Arms, Hips, Feet,  you name it...
  • This happens to me if I sleep on my back. As soon as I turn onto my side i can feel the blood go back in. It's not like when your arms fall asleep though they are not tingly they just go numb.
  • Same here. It's a 3 or 4 times a night thing, too. One night I woke up with my entire right arm and right boob numb from the way I was laying. On top of this, my shins and calves now throb like the day after you go back to the gym for the first time. I don't know what to do about any of it, so I just keep taking it a day at a time & try to get hubby to massage out "the preggers pains" a few times a week.

I'm ready to climb the walls, too, buddy.

  • It happens to me all the time. It could be either an ulnar or median nerve entrapment. Basically, if you sleep with your elbow bent for an extended period of time, you're narrowing the passages in your elbow that those nerves pass through, which will result in numbness. I always used to think that my arm was "falling asleep" but when the numbness went away, I would never get that insane tingling you get when the sensation comes back. I was telling a friend about his (she's a certified hand therapist) and she explained the whole nerve entrapment thing...
  • Vitamin B deficiency can also cause it. I had it, was given vitamin shots, and it went away.
  • This happens to me every night.  And my hands go numb sometimes at physical therapy when I do some of the yoga pose stretches.  I don't have pain in the wrist at all and I haven't noticed much swelling anywhere except my feet and fingers, so I'm not sure what to attribute it to for me either.
