Random Necessities for life with a NB

I'm putting together a must-have list of items to put in a basket for my SIL for her upcoming baby shower. I want to give her a bunch of stuff that you realize you might need at 3 am but don't necessarily know to have on hand until you need it. So far I have infant tylenol/motrin, pedialyte, swaddle blanket.

 What else should I include?

Thanks in advance!!

  • gas drops, nasal aspirator, thermometer, and night light. Those stand out to me. Oh and tons of burp cloths too!
  • Loading the player...
  • I would also suggest gowns and/or sleepers that zip instead of button - I still can't get the buttons to line up!

A few different brands of pacifiers, diaper rash ointment, Mommy Bear/white noise machine.
  • the 8x12 or whatever size water proof lap pads...we put them under him on his changing pad so we don't have to wash the pad all the time, and we put them under his head at night for when he spits up, so we don't have to wash the sheets all the time.

a sound machine that has white noise.  You can get a Graco one at Target that has a night light on it too...we have that one and really like it.

Get a swaddle wrap...like this one...https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3726430 for some reason the organic cotton one is better than the regular cotton ones.

  • Swaddle Mes, thermometer, Happiest Baby on the Block DVD and CD, size C and D batteries for the swing and bouncer

If she is BFing, Gerber makes hot and cold packs to put on the breast in case of infection, clogged duct, etc. Loved that I had those in the middle of the night when I had a very painful clogged duct.

  • If she's going to FF, a formula dispenser

A friend of mine puts bottles w/water & a formula dispenser (pre portioned) in a basket every evening & takes it to bed w/her so she doesn't have to get up & go to the kitchen to feed the baby.

  • Sheet savers--BRU sells them and they have been a lifesaver more than once. They tie to the rails of the crib and you can put LO to sleep with his/her head aligned with it. This way, if LO pukes after being put down you only have to change the sheet saver, as opposed to having to strip the whole mattress.

  • SS and LS plain white onesies. We use these most nights with the swaddle blanket so that LO isn't too warm. I also recommend the light-weight zip up sleepers - so much better than snaps in the middle of the night!
  • Batteries, batteries, battieries in all sizes! Nothing sucks more than the batteries going out on the swing or bouncy seat when they are enjoying it. Saline drops, bulb syringe, and if the mom is bfing, snacks. Something easy to grab and eat like nuts, protein bars, granola bars, crackers, etc. Bottles of water, magazines or a book to read while bfing. Like pp said, if she is FF, the little formula dispenser. Get 2 of them because you can always fill it up and not have to worry about it for a while. Gift cards to target/walmart so she can get formula/diapers etc.
  • Measured dropper for those things that don't come with one.  Gripe water
  • Mylicon

    Bottled water for mommy

  • Thanks for all the great ideas ladies! I will definitely use them!
