Cig smoke & baby blanket: Is washing enough?

MIL made a really beautiful hand knitted blanket for DD, which was very sweet.  It arrived today, and I love it.  However, FIL smokes like a freight train in their house.  The blanket doesn't really smell like smoke (to my great surprise), but I know that there is no doubt that he was blowing smoke all over it.  (I, as well as all their other DC-ILs, have lots of issues with FIL's smoking.  This is nothing new.)

To the point, is washing the blanket enough to remove any chemicals, toxins, etc. that might remain on the blanket from his 2nd hand smoke?  Is there something else I need to do to it?

  • it should be fine after a wash, especially if you're not able to smell it.

  • A woman at work gave me bags and bags of clothes, etc. and she is a heavy smoker.  I washed them twice and they were fine.  The second wash was to appease my DH, I thought they were fine after one!

this, for good measure just wash it twice if your worried.

  • If it doesn't smell, is it possible that she made it somewhere other than in the house?

At any rate, I'd wash it once.

  • That's a tough one. I'm allergic to smoke and get very ill if I smell it. So I probably wouldn't take the chance giving it to my child just in case they have the same allergy. They obviously don't have the communication skills to tell me if they feel awful! lol But I also have a crazy bloodhound nose when it comes to smoke, so I could easily tell if a simple wash was enough to get all the smoke out.

  • I would wash it once or twice and then lay it out in the bright sun. Sunlight can really break down a lot of toxins.
  • I would wash it once or twice, maybe using Oxyclean or some other detergent meant to get rid of odors for the first wash, then something gentler the second time.

This! The sun is very powerful! Sounds like MIL might have already tried to make sure it was clean, which is nice.
