Lovely 28 week appt...news and question.

So I had my 28 week appt today. Got the results of the dreaded GD bloodtest and I PASSED! Woot! Very excited about that. (I celebrated the news with about 5 peanut butter oreos) Also, found out that I didn't gain any weight in the last month so I am still officially 1 lb lighter then when I got pregnant back in September. However, Dr also told me I'm slightly anemic (No surprise there, I've been this way off and on my whole life)  and wants me to take an iron pill in addition to my vitamins.
My dilemma: I'm lucky if LO lets me 'go' once a week. Adding in an iron pill is going to be the straw that broke the camel's back I'm afraid. I've found that oatmeal seems to help (as in I go once a week instead of once every week and a half) but what can I do that will help with the horrible constipation? Anyone tried prunes? I dunno if I can stomach milk of magnesia or anything like that.

  • Benefiber, water, eat lots of fruits and veggies, cut back on dairy.  DD1 has been having some issues and these things have worked for her.  Plus Miralax is safe for pg women and doesn't have any taste.

  • Did your OB talk to you about ways to increase your iron intake through food? You can also request a consult with a dietician.

There is a lot of research out there that suggests that supplemental iron is very difficult for your body to break down and use.

  • Welcome to the wonderful world of iron pills.  I've only been on them a week and so far so good.  I'm eating Activia yogurt and Fibre One cereal.  Also, pitted prunes, if they aren't too dry, are a good boost.  Try adding All Bran Buds to cereal or yogurt and eat as much whole grain and bran as you can stomach.  Good luck.
  • Increase the fiber and water in your diet. Also if you are to get your own iron pills, look for the packaging the advertising "slow release". It's alot easier on your system. I take 4 50mg pills a day (that's how low my iron and blood count is). I was never one to "go" every day. I was always one that goes 2-3 times a week. Right now it's the same.

  • I am anemic as well. My OB told me to take Bifera iron supplements as they do not cause constipation. Target and Wal-mart both have them. If they don't have them on the shelf, just ask and they will order them in (it takes one day for them to arrive).
  • Dried apricots are high in fiber too and IMO taste a little better then prunes.  I also like fiber one english muffins and cereal bars.
  • Eat the fiber one bars and actually the cold cereal with added fiber has helped keep my system regular, surprisingly. I have it for breakfast in the morning and usually for my nightly snack. That is probably why I have put on an extra 10 pounds up to this point too though.
  • Despite all the rumors about iron pills and constipation, I have had the opposite effect.  I used to go about once a week.  Began taking iron supplements about 3 weeks ago and now I go every 2-3 days, sometimes more often.  I eat Fiber Plus bars (the chocolate almond ones are sooo yummy, like a candy bar) and have been eating apples a lot too, so maybe that has helped.
