Babies: 3 - 6 Months

moms who's baby spit up a lot please come in

My DS spits up all the time.  He has also regurgitated about once every two days.  He is 5 weeks and I am wondering how to pervent it and will it get better as he gets older.  I BF and try to burp him after every feeding but he does not always burp.  Should I keep burping until I get him to burp?  Any advice would be great.

  • look into it being reflux.... that's what ours was... does he cry and get fussy with the spit up?

Always feed him sitting up, burp him without putting pressure on his belly and keep him up right for 30 mins after a feeding.

I don't always get a bump out of DD but normally i do! And now she's on baby Zantac

  • Our DS spit up a lot too and was diagnosed with reflux. I EBF and tried to burp him a lot as well.  I have learned that i have to continue burping until I get a good burp out of him.  The best way to do this for me is to just sit him straight up and  he often burps himself.  Once he was on medication he still spit up, but it didn't smell bad and bother him as much.  He barely spits up now, I think he's growing out of it.  We raised the crib and held off on laying him down after feedings.  I hope that helps!
  • Your Pedi might say to thicken his bottles or switch formulas. DD has reflux so we do burp her until she burps. Happiest Baby book provide a really good technique to get them to burp.

  • He does not cry when he spits up but he does it at least 7 times a day.
  • Jack still spits up a LOT.  He doesnt seem bothered by it, and he is kind of a glutton, wanting to nurse every hour to hour and a half.  I try to make sure he always burps, which helps a little, and the minute he pulls his head away when he is nursing I stop nursing him.  I know that he will continue to nurse because he likes it, but he is not hungry at that point..and anything more that he eats would inevitably be spit up.

When he is was five weeks it was harder to burp him, sometimes he just would.not.burp. Now that he is older he pretty much burps himself.

  • I would like to start off by saying that what your baby is doing is totally normal. Some babies just spit up a lot. It does NOT necessarily mean he has reflux, which IMO and my doctor's opinion is totally over-diagnosed these days. All young babies kind of have "reflux" when you think about it due to underdeveloped digestive systems. Please don't put your baby on reflux medication unless you and your doctor have ruled out other causes for the spitting up.

Anyway, my baby is a happy spitter and honestly, it's mostly because he overeats. He loves to nurse, and will just keep eating and eating until the dairy has run dry. He will do the same thing with a bottle of BM, so we've learned to limit his bottles (which he takes while I'm at work) to just 4 oz. and then we immediately trick him with a pacifier when he finishes so he can continue sucking while letting his body register that his belly is full. If he still seems hungry, we'll just give him another ounce or so and re-trick him with the paci. This has helped tremendously. Also, I always make sure he burps after a feeding. Sometimes it will take 5 minutes or so, but there's always a little bit of gas in there. After he's done eating, we minimize his activity for about 30 minutes and make sure pressure is kept off his belly.

Good luck! Having a spitter sucks, but it does seem to get better! Just stock up on bibs. :)

This.  At our 2 week appointment, I asked the pedi how much spitting up was normal because DS was constantly spitting up.  Without really asking us any questions, he said he probably had reflux and wrote us a prescription.  I never got it filled.  Babies spit up.  All of them.  It doesn't mean there's something wrong.  With DS, it never bothered him, and it wasn't affecting his weight gain.  He's just a "happy spitter."  Also, I've noticed in the last few weeks that he doesn't spit up nearly as much as he used to, so know that it does get better.

All that being said... if you truly believe that the spitting up is a problem, is adversely affecting your child's health in some way, absolutely talk to your pedi about it.  If it's really needed, the meds can help a lot.

ETA:  Also with the burping, sometimes it just takes a while.  Keep burping til something comes out.  One thing that I found helpful was to keep switching his position if he wouldn't burp.  I would rotate between my shoulder, to sitting him up on my lap, to laying him face down across my lap.  Often times, the second I would change positions, he would immediately burp.
